Apatt | 17 comments I love SF/F and spend far too much time on Reddit. Unfortunately I know very few people who read books. So, I hope to find new reading friends here at Goodreads.

This is my bookshelf if you are interested.

message 2: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 4 comments I'm in pretty much the same boat. I'm the only one of my friends who reads at all, but I really love to. This mostly leaves me stuck with finding good books to read.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Join up with different groups here on GR. Participate in their monthly reads and you'll find some folks with similar tastes.

whimsicalmeerkat That's the exact advice I was going to give. :)

Feel free to stalk my group lists. I'm in several SF/F groups.

What she said.

message 6: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments Thanks for the tips :)

message 7: by Jack (new)

Jack (attackofjack) It would seem not having friends that read is a common conundrum. :(

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

None of my friends/family read, except my niece. And I've already got her started on A Song of Ice and Fire.

message 9: by Jack (last edited Aug 29, 2011 11:00PM) (new)

Jack (attackofjack) I've got a couple of friends I can coerce into reading, but they never pick anything on their own. Makes me slightly glad for YA Novels, non-readers pick up on them fairly easily.

A Song of Fire and Ice is a great book. :) Very good series.

message 10: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments I don't even have Facebook friends that read!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't even have facebook. :P

message 12: by Jack (new)

Jack (attackofjack) I have Google Plus. Is this sufficient? >90% of my circled people are redditors, though.

message 13: by Laurel (new)

Laurel (emmalish) | 9 comments I have friends who read, but their taste and mine are totally different.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I have friends who read, but they have no taste.

I kid, I have no friends.

message 15: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments I have Google + also :)

message 16: by Laurel (new)

Laurel (emmalish) | 9 comments Is it sad that I keep looking for the upvote button?

message 17: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments At least you are more inclined to upvote.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I try to upvote everywhere and it never works.

message 19: by Jack (new)

Jack (attackofjack) I tried to upvote that statement and then I realised once again that it doesn't work.

message 20: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments It's the thought that counts. Thoughts are kinda like abacuses (abaci?)I guess :)

Many thanks :)
Interesting how we both rate Dune a sort of "meh!".

I'm gonna re-read it as an audiobook, may be this time it will click better.

message 25: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat That seems like it would depend strongly on who the reader is.

You know what it was about dune? All of the Protagonistic characters had absolutely no character flaws save extreme hubris, and they weren't punished for it. It felt kind of like watching a bunch of very un-creative people role play being ubertough... The setting was fantastic, but the characters didn't develop in a way I liked.

message 27: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I saw them as very flawed and definitely wouldn't have said they weren't punished. Granted, I first read this in my teens and read the rest of the series before the three or four times I've re-read it, but we still see it very differently. :)

message 28: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 4 comments Had to post somewhere and this seemed relevant eventhough it isn't dune related. At a social gathering amongst friends and myself and the other read have completely ostracized the rest of the people talking about books. I have to get him on goodreads.

message 29: by Apatt (new)

Not entirely sure what you mean, did you miss out a comma or some punctuation things somewhere? Any way, good luck with getting your friend on goodreads!

Mayhaps, but they just felt so infallible to me. Even his pregnant mother was able to overcome the leader of a team of desert guerrilla commandos handedly. Paul seemed to never make any mistakes, and presented an omnipotent insight into the future. Seemed like Paul's only Fault was his self doubt, which he overcame by virtue of having recognized his potential to be a tyrant.

Of course, it's probably elaborated on in the subsequent books... I've only just read the first, and as a standalone it hasn't my flavor of humanizing traits in protagonists.

message 31: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat You definitely should read at least the second, if those are your problems with the first.

message 32: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1 comments You should check out In Her Name:Empire by Michael R. Hicks - great sci-fi stuff!!

message 33: by Melody (new)

Melody (melodykiper) | 1 comments We have 72% similar taste, so I added you.

message 34: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments Thanks very much Melody :)

message 35: by Ektoras (new)

Ektoras Added you, I've got a scifi interest as well, mainly space opera

message 36: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments Thanks Ektoras :)

message 37: by Chris (new)

Chris (theheaventree) | 4 comments I added you as well. I like a bit of scifi, but am always interested in finding more! I'm looking forward to picking up some of the books from your favourites shelf.

message 38: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments Thanks Chris. Everybody seems to have read "The Great Gatsby" except me, I tried it on audiobook but couldn't get into it. I have to read the printed version it seems.

message 39: by Drew (new)

Drew | 2 comments Same here, for some reason I never got around to reading The Great Gatsby. I cant believe how many books some of you guys have rated. I saw you rated "A People's History of the United States" 5 stars, Ektoras. I'm gonna start into that one next, looks like a bit of heavy reading! Gonna add all of ya

message 40: by Apatt (new)

Apatt | 17 comments Drew wrote: "I saw you rated "A People's History of the United States" 5 sta..."

I don't think that's me Drew, I don't read such books, I very seldom read non-fiction.

Thanks for your invite :)

message 41: by Drew (new)

Drew | 2 comments Sorry Apatt that was directed at Ektoras. Yes sometimes non-fiction is tough to read, especially at 700 pages! I usually need a good easy book to read after all that

message 42: by Ektoras (new)

Ektoras Hi Drew...yes it is a great book, the history that they should have taught in school in the US!

message 43: by Chris (new)

Chris (theheaventree) | 4 comments I was skeptical of The Great Gatsby before I read it (great American novel? i'm not American!), but it's definitely worth reading. The first few pages alone have some of my favourite prose ever. But be warned: most of the characters are unlikeable. If you can get past a narrator/characters that are shallow/pretentious, then it's a great story!

message 44: by Jeannette (last edited Mar 10, 2012 11:50PM) (new)

Jeannette Westlake | 4 comments We have 79% similarity for the books we have in common, we have about 100 books in common, and I, too, spend waaaay too much time on reddit, so I added you as a friend.

ETA: But how could you only rate A Canticle for Leibowitz as 3 stars?

message 45: by Apatt (last edited Mar 11, 2012 12:13AM) (new)

Apatt | 17 comments Thanks Jeannette. For me A Canticle for Leibowitz was less compelling than I expected. Don't mind me, I don't always appreciate the finer things in life :)

In Reddit do you read the r/printsf subreddit? I was recently invited to be a mod there. Relatively small community but the members know their sf!

Just subscribed, looks like an interesting sub. Also, love the flair you've got going there. :)

I do, been subscriber for long time.
Good sub. Little in shadow of /r/scifi thought.

R/scifi covers sf movies, tv, books etc. (as you know), a lot of time posts about sf books are ignored.

R/Fantasy is also good. :)
