I read a book once about a boy whose older brother seems perfect; he's handsome, intelligent, talented, charming, and good. He dies when he tries to save a little boy from falling down a waterfall (they both die when they hit the rocks). His ghost follows around his younger brother for a while. No one else can see him. The younger brother spends his time skateboarding (and falling) and getting a tree to plant at his brother's grave, which his brother's ghost asked for.

Searching inside that book on Google also shows snippets that reference finding a tree for his brother and having a tree dedication ceremony for him.
