Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I am def. liking her new book The Preacher better than I liked Ice Princess, but CL still focuses too much on the "dramatic flare" that you see more in American authors than Scandanavian...JMO. When I read Scandanavian mysteries, I don't like feeling like I am reading a soap opera!

I totally agree Naomi. I recently decided to read a book by Lisa Unger, just to try to read something a little different. The style of writing by foreign authors and some american authors just cannot compare. I have The Preacher on my to-read list after I finish James Thompsons second book Lucifers Tears

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Yeah, I totally like the darkness in Scandanavian lit and the focus on the crime vs. the main character. In reading The Preacher which I wrap up today, there was just way too much focus on Patrik's wife and family drama..I don't know if I will read any more CL to be totally honest.

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Marjorie..you def. will not like her new one then..I agree with the soap opera comment...

message 7: by Anna, the Enabler (new)

Anna (aetm) | 192 comments I read The Preacher last summer (as I ran to a UK copy). Way too much family drama and visiting relatives in it to make it even remotely noir.

message 8: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Maybe we can call it Nordic Lite?

message 9: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I don't even think it would classify as that...

message 10: by Anna, the Enabler (new)

Anna (aetm) | 192 comments Nordic harlequin noir-ish. Nordic harlequin gris.

Annie (atchanks) Errr-- I just downloaded a copy of The Ice Princess from netgalley -- I should have read this thread first! Bummer but I will give it a try

message 13: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Annie...I can't wait to see what you think of it.

message 14: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments BTW..did you do Ice Princess or The Preacher? I know they had The Preacher on there cuz I got it off there.

message 15: by ???!!! (new)

???!!! | 10 comments I totally agree that American writers tend to be a little elo-dramatic and with hints of American heroism. It was not until I look through the all the authors I've read I discovered most of them are Scandinavian authors. But I like "Ice Princess." CL writing technique gives the reader almost like a movie picture in the mind's eye, with the movements, sounds, smell. I did not have the chance to read The Preacher.

message 16: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments It was free on Netgalley. I don't know if it still is.
