I'm going to visit Avila in Castile y Leon in a few days time. Could anyone recommend a book set around those parts?

Check out 'The Reign in Spain' by Galician author W. Kristjan Arnold. Great overview of 20th century Spain. May not cover Castile y Leon specifically, but you will learn a lot about the history of Spain.
