When the Night Comes
by Favel ParrettThis book is primarily set in Tasmania. However, one of the main characters works on the 'Nella Dan", a supply ship to the Australian bases in Antartica. There are some chapters describing his visits Antartica and life on board.
I'd like to add a book I just started reading last night. It's called Up To This Pointe. It's a YA novel about a ballerina(!) who has a fixation on Antarctica and actually has one of the original explorers as an ancestor, surname of Scott. I'm really enjoying it so far. She's at McMurdo Station for most of the story.
Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition: The Remarkable Journal of Shackleton's Polar-Bound Cat
by Caroline Alexander is a wonderful story, but sad at times.Winter Of The White Seal by Marie Herbert is a survival story.
For nature lovers, two more books with the backdrop of Antarctica:
March of the Penguins: Companion to the Major Motion Picture by Luc Jacquet
Penguins by Roger Tory Peterson
Here's a fictional work dealing with love and loss and penguin researchers in Antarctica:
My Last Continent by Midge Raymond
It's already been mentioned, but
was intensely interesting. My friend did a master's thesis on Byrd and got me really interested.
I am part of a group of 80 women with science backgrounds traveling to Antarctica in 2019 with Homeward Bound. Some of us are eager to read up on this amazing place we will be visiting, and are excited to have an extensive list of books ready-made here. Thanks to the list-makers of the world!
I found a couple more for the Antarctica list:Cold People by Tom Rob Smith
Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night by Julian Sancton
