by H. Paul Jeffers
byBrian GarfieldTwo excellent books with a military connection about Alaska. The Thousand-Mile War is the definitive book about the Aleutian Islands Campaign in WWII, and the only occupation of US territory by Japanese forces; and Burning Cold is about the burning and sinking of the cruise ship Prinsendam in the Gulf of Alaska in the early 80s, and the US Coast Guard's miraculous rescue of over three hundred passengers without any loss of life - a rescue I was involved in while serving in the CG at CGAirSta Kodiak, AK.

I read a lot about Alaska. The books that I have read are too numerous to list here. For historical non-fiction, WWII offers many publications related to the battles for Attu and the Air Force attacks on the Kuril Islands. Dana Stabenow has an entire series of mysteries involving a Native American detective named Kate Shugak. There is so much to read.
