I really liked the lists of naughty things that the children are getting up to, and I thought that children would probably enjoy writing their own, as well.

Thanks Clare, I don't know this book, but it sounds like a good one to read aloud to younger children and use as a guided reading book as well. What age would you use it as a book for children to read to themselves?

Ailbhe Ryan | 3 comments Hi, here is my review of a poem, entitled "Island Man" by Grace Nichlos. My appologies about posting it in this box but I'm having trouble creating a link.
This is an extreamly descriptive piece of writing that can only enhance vocabulary for children within a classroom setting. Nichlos writes about a Caribbean man who wakes up with a sound in his head, one of which was familiar to him. She glides on through the poem talking about the sun rising from the east but then the person in the poem comes back to reality with the noise of London. I like this poem as it can lead to cross curricular lessons and certainly creative writing for the children.

Hi Ailbhe, do you know which book it is in? Grace Nichols has collections specifically for Primary children: Poetry Jump-Up, Give Yourself a Hug, Asana and the Animals Come on into My Tropical Garden: Poems for Children and The Poet Cat

I recently caught up on decades worth of history that I had neglected, learning more about events such as this one. If any of you ever get a chance, visit MONUMENT in london, theres a tall pin shaped structure 202ft in the air representing the distance the fire reached from pudding lane to the strucure itself. Very monumental!

But anyway, back to the point, i'd like to read this book sometime.

message 23: by Ailbhe (new)

Ailbhe Ryan | 3 comments Hi, here is another review of a book, "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Paterson. This is a very touching and moving novel with great scope for the imagination to evolve. It is in a country setting where the children have to get the bus to school everyday. As a result of this two children become great friends - even though Leslie (a girl) bet Jess in a race at high school! The two children create a magical kingdom where nobody else goes and the only way to get there is by swinging over a creek with a rope. One day, their teacher asks Jess to visit a gallery with her and he accepts the invitation which means that Leslie will go to the 'kingdom' alone.. This is an epic story about two friends but an awful accident tears them apart. I think this is a suited tale for children aged ten to twelve as it could help thier moral development and understanding of unexpected events.

Thanks Robert, great review. I agree, Jacqueline Wilson is excellent at getting into the concerns and interests of children. Have you read There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom? Louis Sacher is good at that, too.

Zaid | 18 comments Hi to all in P4,
I thought I would start with a book that ties in nicely to our RE and Geography session this week, titled ‘The Usborne Book of Peoples of the World’. During the Summer I reviewed another Usborne information book (See Inside Space). To echo Alison’s thoughts; Usborne is a decent publisher with some very good quality information titles.

Zaid | 18 comments I was so inspired by a snippet of poetry I read; and several other reviews of Benjamin Zephaniah’s work throughout the summer, that I had to go and find a full book for myself. He is a British born Rastafarian writer and dub poet. His work may not be everyone’s cup of tea but there is something about it that I absolutely love. Also loving his live readings on you tube!

I'm a huge fan of Benjamin Zephaniah. I would always use a YouTube or other clip of him reading his poems; listening to people who are not Afro Caribbean trying to do patois makes me squirm. He's an inspirational man as well as a great writer. There's a fantastic R4 Bookclub podcast of him talking about Refugee Boy which is a great read, although more aimed at young adults than KS2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/...

Great reviews, Niamh. I love Martin Waddell's books, they're very gentle and depict family relationships beautifully. It's a rare example of a close relationship between a father-figure and son, as well, which is a good thing to note if you're in a KS1 or EYFS setting where there is a child being brought up by a single dad.

Thought I'd through a really useful children's non-fiction book in. Great for geography in general (map work, landscapes, comparing and contrasting different countries and environments) but also very useful in many other areas of study!
