message 1: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 1 comments I am reading The Fiery Cross and recently finished the previous book. It has been some time since I read the first two, and I cannot for the life of me figure out/remember who Marsali is (other than Fergus' wife.) Help!

message 2: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments Marsali is Jamie's step-daughter - she is Laoghaires eldest from her first marriage

message 3: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Yep, I disliked her in the beginning but by Voyager's end I really liked her. She's a great character.

message 4: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments Marsali is a great character and a wonderful friend to Claire... I was upset at the way Fergus treated her.

message 5: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments i really like that we get to see her grown-up, which we totally didn't get to do as much with Brianna...she was like 5 and then she was an adult...so I sort of see them working together (does that make sense)

message 6: by Cristina (new)

Cristina (cristina_) | 38 comments When you get to Echo, you'll really like her. She has grown up so much and Jamie and Claire have been such good influence on her.

message 7: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Yeah, I really and truly have grown to like Marsali despite her parentage, hahaha!

message 8: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments Haha no kidding, she is nothing like her mother for sure :)

message 9: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I think she finally warmed up to Claire when she realized how much Claire and Jamie love each other. She really grew up when she married Fergus and had her own family.

message 10: by Jen (at last!) (last edited Sep 06, 2011 08:41PM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Yeah, she did. She's an amazing woman and I can't help and think that it's all due to Jamie and "Mother Claire's" influence. :)

message 11: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I think she got some of Loaghaire's personality traits too. Like knowing what she wants and doing whatever necessary to get it. She wanted Fergus, and she fought the odds to get him. As much as we all hate Loaghaire she was doing the same thing. She just went about it with the wrong man and the wrong way. Marsali gets that from her mom, but she focuses that strong will in a much better way.

message 12: by Jen (at last!) (last edited May 31, 2013 10:20AM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments I see Marsali's fighting for her son, Henri-Christian, as a trait acquired via the influence of Jamie. He taught her not to discriminate through his example. He never judged people for being different. He accepted them.

message 13: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Jen - I agree with you to an extent. Yes, she is accepting of things, like Jamie, but I think that even as selfish as Laoghaire is, I think she would treat Henri-Christian kindly. After all, she did somewhat beg, even bargain with Claire to help save him. He is her grandson, after all.

message 14: by Jen (at last!) (last edited Sep 07, 2011 04:46PM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Man, I completely forgot that part, Carren! When was that again? It's been a while since my last re-read so I'm pretty sure I skimmed over any parts dealing with Laoghaire since she's not one of my favorite characters.

Ok, so I know she's not heartless...lol. Drat her for showing a favorable side! I really don't want to find any redeeming qualities in her b/c of what she did to Claire! ;)

message 15: by Tina (new)

Tina | 162 comments I am just starting TFC as well and I don't remember Fergus treating Marsali badly. Please help me to remember unless it is further into the book or hasn't happened yet. Thanks.

I am guessing that Henri-Christian, Marsali's son isn't born yet in TFC. The only children they have now are Germain and Baby Joan, unless I haven't read up to that part yet. I am only on page 237.

message 16: by Alysses (new)

Alysses (rumor_has_it) Aye Tina! You have a few more bairns and books to go :-)

message 17: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Jen: The part where she asks Claire to help Henri-Christian is in Echo.

message 18: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Oooh, shoot! Sorry, Tina. Didna mean to spoil anythin'!
You have a way to go yet to meet little Henri-Christian! :)

message 19: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments well and remember that in the end she fell in love with a Crippled man. I think that Loaghaire has an immense ability to love. I think she would have loved Henri-Christian and defended and protected her with the same ferocity she did Marsali and Joan.

message 20: by Alysses (new)

Alysses (rumor_has_it) ok I'm going to have to STOP reading Goodreads until I finish Echo. Way too many spoilers on here.

message 21: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Ooh, i'm sorry Mirely! I totally should have spoiler tagged that!

message 22: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Yeah, yeah, you guys are right. Shucks. I really don't want to admire that woman. hehehe...

message 23: by Barb (new)

Barb | 2 comments You all are ahead of me in the series. I'm on Drums of Autumn and have a question about what happened to Marsali. The group are now in the American colonies blown there in the hurricane. Fergus is with them but there hasn't been any reference to Marsali yet. What did I miss? Is she with Fergus in America?

message 24: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 155 comments Barb wrote: "Is she with Fergus in America?"

I forget all the particulars but at the end of Voyager Marsali and Fergus (view spoiler). Sometime before Drums of Autumn begins (view spoiler)

message 25: by Barb (new)

Barb | 2 comments Thanks, Vicky I missed that I knew he wasn't on boat with J&C, but suddenly he is with them again. I listen to audio books. Maybe I slept through that part!

I don't think it was explicitly said, it was one of those read between the lines moments. :)
