Thanks, Judy. I have had that book for years, and it looks wonderful. It is about time I made it a priority to read it!

Anne (reachannereach) Great list, Christi. Of course I think so because some of them are favorites of mine while others are on my own 52 list.

Chrissie Christi, I am actually out the door, but I downloaded several samples from your list :0)

I saw you have Armenian Golgotha, which I have too. I BET we will love that one! In addition you have Portrait of a Tukish Family, which I KNOW you will adore!!!! I will return to your list later. I am so jealous. Palace Walk is not available on Kindle. Dam. I have been watching that for ages. A few were on Kindle and that is nice!

I am so glad you joined Christi. (((HUGS)))

Thank you, Anne. I will go have a look at your list and see if I can find some more good titles for my list!

I just found The Armenian Golgotha at the Borders going out of business sale. Can't wait to read it. I have another book by the author, which has been sitting here waiting to be read called Black Dog of Fate. It also looks good. As for the Portrait of a Turkish Family, I have been trying to get that for awhile now. Can't find it new, may end up ordering a used copy. It is expensive!! I wonder why Palace Walk isn't available on kindle? The author is certainly well known. I wouldn't consider his work obscure...Hope it becomes available to you soon :)

By the way, a book that is one of my favorites, that may be similar to Guests of the Sheik, isThe Women of Deh Koh: Lives in an Iranian Village. Different country, but topic seems along the same lines...

message 9: by Betty (new)

Betty The Blind Owl is a classic in Iranian literature. I browsed through it and plan to keep it at the ready!

Betty Cities of Salt, another fabulous choice.

message 11: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I started Cities of Salt this summer. It is a long read, but a good one.

Chrissie So, Anne, I guess what you are saying is that this book isn't a page-turner, that you struggle to read it, but when you are done you are glad you did. Right? I don't know.... I prefer books that grab you and make even difficult subjects impossible to put down. Some author's can do this! Reading need never be a struggle.

Maybe I should add it anyway. Asmah, you really liked it........ I read the sample of The Blind Owl, which defintitely got me interested, but I get annoyed when the smple of a book ONLY is of the introduction and you cannot taste the stlye of writing of the author!

BTW, I can sample Guests of the Sheik! Nice! I am really a nut for wanting to check out how authors express themselves before I purchase a book.

Has anyone read the Blind Owl? I can find no sample of the wuthor's writing style anywhere....... Heck, I may just add it anyway. I am so cirious to know why it caused so many suicides. I am behaving just as the woman who wrote the introduction.

Christi, Portrait of a Turkish Family is available on Kindle. Here, I was very lucky! It is the newer, very popular books that are usually availbe on Kindle. This is rapidly changing. Many, many new books are now being kindalized.

No, it's not a struggle. Just a thick book with small print.

Chrissie, I have the book. If you like, I can send you a couple of paragraphs from the book. Would you like the first two paragraphs of the story?

message 15: by Chrissie (last edited Sep 09, 2011 06:07AM) (new)

Chrissie Christi, yes please! Please do sent the first two paragraphs of The Blind Owl. Thanks.

Anne, oh. I thought that it was the writing that stopped you from finishing the book. OK, so both you and Asmah liked it. WHY did you like it? Is it the style of writing ? Is it the story? Is it the political message? Is it the characters? Is there humor? Asmah, I am interested in your opinions too. Or maybe you read the book ages ago........

message 16: by Betty (new)

Betty Chrissie, can I put your questions on hold re: Cities of Salt and Blind Owl? thks.

message 17: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Of course, Asmah!

This one is actually in my library system so I am thinking of it for my list. It sounds good.

Janice (jamasc) There are some interesting titles here, Christi. The one that particularily drew my attention was The Blind Owl.

I am impressed that you found it in your library! I think it is a fantastic book. I would be interested to hear other people's opinions. I would give a couple of my own opinions, but I don't want to give anything away!

I got this at the Border's going out of business sale, and it is very hard for me not to read it now! I am going to try to save it for next year, since I have it on this list! It is a short book, with a gorgeous cover; it is tempting me daily!

The wonders of inter-library loan.

Lol, yes, the wonders! I have worked in two public library systems, yet it had been years since I have taken advantage of the inter-library loan system! I guess I have become too impatient for that! I want to see the book NOW :) Good for you though, I am glad there are still patient folks out there who use that system!

message 24: by Sue (new)

Sue Oh yes. It's been a major source for me here at GR for my international books (when I haven't swapped for or bought them).
