Vivian (_vivian) | 77 comments I just read Wintergirls and despite issues with the writing style, I thought it was really good. I know Speak is supposed to be a great book too. Anyone here read it?

message 3: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I read Speak and loved it. The MC has a great voice. I have Wintergirls and Prom as well but have yet to read either.

message 4: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments Speak was a wonderful book. It was a very quick read and worth it.

I have Wintergirls, Prom, and Twisted sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get to them.

message 5: by Carina (new)

Carina I watched the movie based on the book Speak and it was really good. The other day I went to a library sale and got the book. I'll give it a try soon.

message 6: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 77 comments I read Speak and don't know if it was my mood at the time, but I thought it was fine, but not spectacular. I think the topic is an important one, but it just didn't do it for me.

How was Kristen Stewart in the movie? I was super surprised when the author talked about the movie at the end of the book and she mentioned her as the actress.

message 7: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments She's actually pretty good in that movie. She was much younger. Whatever made her become sucky must have happened after Speak.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Did she have the weird twitchy thing going on Speak?

message 9: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments She didn't. I almost fell off of my couch when she opened her mouth and normal speech came out of it.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments It's a miracle! I'm still not completely thrilled that she's Snow White, but the movie looks like it's going to be good in spite of the fact.

message 11: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 77 comments My friend tried to convince me that she is a good actress, even in Twilight (supposedly, it's other actors in there that suck), but I've only seen the first one and don't remember much about it. I'm just afraid I'm going to watch her in a movie and think Bella the whole time.

message 12: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I really have no idea if she can act or not. Maybe she played Bella exactly how she believed the character was supposed to act. I just noticed that she was twitchy.

message 13: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 93 comments The character was awkward and didn't talk much but yeah I agree with Jenny she didn't mess up the role. Twilight has soap opera acting...

message 14: by Gwennie (last edited Dec 05, 2011 07:33AM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I had this whold snobby bitchy thing about Stewart typed, but I don't want to be a downer so I deleted it.

I'm not a fan of hers at all. The only time I can stand her is when she plays burnout pothead rolls, like Adventureland. And I think that's because she can't separate her own personality from the characters she portraying...

oops, it still came out bitchy... sorry, guys!

message 15: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 93 comments Hahaha nah it's true Wendy.

message 16: by Carina (new)

Carina Haha that's so funny cause I'm watching Adventureland RIGHT NOW! LOL
I did like her in Speak and I think her best performance was in The Runaways. I dodn't think she's an amazing actress, but I do like her.

message 17: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 93 comments I really liked the book Speak and liked the movie. I had to read the book for school and was happy that the book was good. I didn't see runaways.

message 18: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleycw) | 257 comments I read Speak and Wintergirls and liked both of them. As much as I love weird books, it was nice to read a book about such powerful subjects. I haven't read the others because I haven't had access to them yet, but I plan on it

message 19: by Carina (new)

Carina I've heard some not so good things about Wintergirls Ashley, so its good to hear some positive opinions =)

message 20: by Roshini (new)

Roshini Did anyone watch The Cake Eaters? She was in that as well.

message 21: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I didn't see that one. What was it about?

Forget KStew for a minute. Here's a person I don't want to see land any more movie roles. It's painful to watch her on screen.

message 22: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 77 comments Oops, didn't mean to start any bashing here...

Anyways, I read Wintergirls and liked it more than Speak. I couldn't stand the writing style though.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments You were fine. I think a little bit of silliness in general conversation is okay. I don't think anyone here is out to hate on women in general.

I almost picked up Wintergirls and a couple of different people told me not to bother. The only book of hers that looks interesting enough that I might actually try out is Twisted. Speak does look interesting, but I'm not sure if I'm motivated to read it.

Was Prom the book that the Disney movie was based on?

message 24: by Emily (new)

Emily (librarylil) | 358 comments My favorite of hers is Catalyst. At the time I read it (about 6 years ago) most people were surprised I liked it more than Speak, because Speak was seen as such a big deal. But while I agree that Speak's subject matter is important, the book didn't resonate with me as much. I sympathized with Melinda, but couldn't empathize. I knew what happened pretty much from the beginning and just couldn't imagine responding the way she did. In Catalyst, I could really identify with Kate.

My favorite line from Catalyst, said as the main character is getting dressed in a hurry, she skips the bra:
"God forgot to give me breasts. Is it any wonder I'm an anthiest?" (Don't have the book in front of me so could be slightly off.)

message 25: by Rea Nicole ✰ (new)

Rea Nicole ✰ (regannicole) Speak Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is one of my favorite books of all time. I first read it while I was a very young teen but have re-read it over the years. I thought the Lifetime movie adaption was wonderful as well...I have planned to read more of Anderson's books but haven't gotten around to it :(

message 26: by Isabel (new)

Isabel | 3 comments I loved Wintergirls, it's my favourite one of her books. I saw the Lifetime movie before I read Speak, and found that for once I preferred the movie to the book. (The book was also great though!)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Added The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson

Library Lady 📚 | 12 comments I loved Speak and Wintergirls (there are some weird stuff they do with the formatting there, but I listened to it on audio so that didn't bother me at all).

I didn't care for Prom and Twisted very much, but LHA is still one of my favorite authors.

message 29: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments The first book I read by her was Speak but the one that has always stood out for me is The Impossible Knife of Memory.

I have not read ALL of her books, but they are all on my TBR. I have yet to read something by her that I do not like. I often recommend her books to students who have read all of the John Green books and need something similar.
