Here's the ARC site I just mentioned: http://www.artrenewal.org/

Aside from recommended ateliers, they are a wonderful reference!

Thanks Kim! The ARC site is awesome! There seems to be plenty of opportunities on this site to learn about classical drawing and painting. I bookmarked it. Salam Kim.

Glad you liked it, Reem. I think you can find some books recommended there too. Check out the forums as well. I'll put up others as I reconstruct my favorites from what I lost when my computer died.

One of my very favorite magazines for Outsider Art/Visionary Art/Art Brut: http://rawvision.com/

Editing this to say that there is a nice book, apparently, of the first three issues of this mag. I added it to the to-reads.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I updated my blog and put up my last painting if you want to take a look. You can see it here: http://kimpower.blogspot.com/
Sorry about the shameless plug, but I think at least Kay requested to see it at some point.
I'll get back here after the New Year otherwise. Have a happy and peaceful one!

S. Kay (cobwebs) | 90 comments Just wanted to point you all towards a great website an artist friend of mine just sent me... http://www.dailygusto.com/

He was pointing me towards this article on subject matter: http://www.dailygusto.com/blog/archiv...

...but I'm finding a lot of interesting topics there.

Those are all good, will post some soon, there are many digital artists out there as well who post, we could look into those maybe?

Don't mind looking at some digital artists, Todd, even though that's not my thing. It does seem to be the going trend. I guess I'm sort of a traditionalist. I think you have to get your hands dirty to really be doing art. ;0) Enjoying some of the blogs you mentioned. Particularly interested in the fineart.sk link for reference, thanks! Just saw a big exhibit of Waterhouse in Groningen. You can see my thoughts on that here: http://kimpower.blogspot.com/ I'll let you know what I think of the others as I have time to peruse them. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that's an eclectic list, Todd! I like the first best, Mian Situ.

message 17: by Todd (new)

Todd (tekeller) | 55 comments Yeah, he is awesome. Saw him first in the Southwest Painters mag.

message 19: by Odette (last edited Mar 20, 2009 07:41PM) (new)

Odette | 25 comments I especially love these two works from the websites above:
http://www.processrecess.com/detail.p...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ia0mn597z0k...

And going back to Kim's post on the 10th, I really want to read Danny Gregory's book "An Illustrated Life: Drawing Inspiration from the Private Sketchbooks of Artists, Illustrators and Designers"
...and the Lines and Colors blog is great.

A friend of mine does wonderful sky paintings:
http://www.markelfinearts.com/port.ph...
(sadly, she doesn't keep a blog)
The other artists represented by the Markel gallery are also really interesting.

Do any of you favorite galleries where you live that consistently match your taste in art? (I haven't found any yet in Atlanta, but I keep hoping.)

Wally workman gallery in Austin usually has some interesting stuff,(don't go by the front page, some crazy artist on there this month.)
And for historical art in Austin we go here-

Thanks so much!
I know most of those artists listed that are representational. I studied with Dan Gerhartz
Fabulous painter and teacher!! Great DVDs of most of these artists are at smartflix.com for rent.

The best teachers in my opinion are Charles Mundy, Zhaoming Wu, John Howard Sanden, Perrin Sparks, Everette Raymond Kinstler, Richard Schmid, Susan Lyon,Dan Gerhartz, Scott Burdick and the very best as far as teaching methods: Morgan Weistling.

I also learned a lot from studying in person with:

Brenda | 7 comments and of course the master

www.richardschmidt.com

His book "All I know about painting" sums up all these artists in my opinion.

message 25: by Todd (last edited Mar 21, 2009 07:42PM) (new)

Todd (tekeller) | 55 comments Yes i think zhao, sanden, greene, and schmidt are good.
Going through schmidt's book now, i heard that the book you mentioned is the one to read-not too far into it but seems pretty good.-looking forward to finishing it.
There is also a guy i came across recently who is right up my alley, he has a dvd on utrecht and so far it's really nice, because it deals with the geometry of the scene mainly...even from a color perspective.
Usually i don't buy dvd's too much? but have to say that jeremy lipking's is probably one of the worst i have ever gotten and paid that much for.-not sure if you have seen it, but i had a bad opinion of it, although it was an opinion so. :)

message 26: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 7 comments I heard Watts wasn't worth it either. What's the guys name from Utrecht?
The nice thing about smartflix is you can test b4 you buy.

message 27: by Todd (new)

Todd (tekeller) | 55 comments Hey, that painters name is Tim Deibler.-i've never heard of him, but his dvd is cool, very common sense, but nice to see how he thinks about hitting the canvas.

I'll try that smartflix, haven't used that either. thanks!

Hey, great discussion, guys, thanks for all the name-dropping. ;0) I will chime in and say that the Schmidt book is one of my favorites. I need to go back and re-read some of his pages, though his work doesn't move me too much. He's clear and charming in the way he presents his points. Brenda, how lucky that you have participated in so many wonderful workshops! Here's one I would definitely do if I could get to the States: http://guest.cvent.com/EVENTS/Info/Su... Weekend with the Masters. I'm sure there are some gems to be gleaned there!

This was an interesting article about geometry in ancient art. It comes from a book i have not read but looks interesting, so if you like math then...!
