Abel's IslandSteig creates a wonderful and fun book about self-discovery. The rich, pampered mouse Abel gets swept onto a deserted island, and unlearns all sorts of trash from his former life--such as his prejudice against "low-class" bull frogs when one arrives at the island. He learns the pleasure of using his mouse's abilities (such as gnawing), learns to appreciate nature, learns to make statues, and finally learns how to rely on himself alone for his rescue. Both children and adults will find this book amusing and thought provoking.
My grandkids love anything with wizards and fantasy. A non-wizard book thatmy granddaughter shared with me is The City of Ember. I want to read the sequel.I love Sea Cutter. My grandkids will read it after the track meets and concerts are done.
Thanks Malika. I added The City of Ember. Thanks, too, for liking Sea Cutter. I hope your grandkids like it. It sounds as if you might like a "Wizards" shelf.
I love the Theodosia series by R.L. LaFevers -Theodosia is 12 year old girl in Victorian England who is able to connect to ancient Egyptian magic. A mix of mystery, magic and Egypt - she's sort of like a female Indiana Jones...there are a couple in the series and their a more complex read than some of the other series.
Thanks, Andrea, for the recommendation. I've added the Theodosia books to our list. Best Wishes, Tim
The 11 year old in my house gave me this elusive list two weeks ago. I forgot it was filed in my purse.Percy Jackson Olypians
Twilight
Heroes of Olympus

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Circle of Magic
War of the Worlds
Chronicles of Narnia
Vapirates
Inkheart
Hunger Game
Ranger's Apprentice
Misfits
I will have more to follow. School friends are pitching in with lists.
Malika Bourne

Thanks Michelle. Some of these books are listed in "Parents of Tweens," but many aren't yet. I'll add them soon.
Ha, ha, I saw several of them when I paged through the shelves - right after leaving that list comment. I saw lots of titles that I want to reread and review this summer, and lots of new ones, as well. Nice work. You've done much more with your Goodreads group than I've done with mine!

Tell us about your group!
It's a meet the author group, but I haven't been promoting it. I just pop on when I see comments, and I haven't seen any for a while. http://www.goodreads.com/topic/list_g...

Blog, twitter and facebook are probably the most effective, but like everything else, you have to build up a fan base. That's been a slow process for me.
Hi Timothy, I will add it to my blog. My 12 yo granddaughteer joined goodreads this week. In the last month she's read 16 books. Malika
I just posted a blog titled Parents What are your tweens reading? on my No Non-cents Nanna blog.http://nonon-centsnanna.blogspot.com/... I will be linking it to Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and Google +. I have a growing group of Mommy Blogger followers.
Tay went out to a study group, but hopefully she'll be back to post later today.
I need plently fo viewres for my bl9g. If you visit, PLEAS leave the titles of you books in my comment section. this will reinforce that I do had author contacts and maybe get positive attention for us all. It seems that bloggers stay within their groups unless a link is given. I branch out alot.
Malika Bourne
PS I am working on picture books right now.

My daughter is turning out to be one of those children that isn't interested in fiction. (I'm hoping that will change with time.) She seems to drawn to non-fiction. She loved the "-Ology" books: Egyptology...
She also like those dreadful Ripley's books. She has a vision problem so long texts are difficult, and I'm frequently at my wits end to find things for her read. Homework, fortunately (?!?) takes up most of her free time.
If anyone runs across a book that seems like it would fit the bill, I'll be interested in knowing about it.
Hi Pam,How old is your daughter? Do you think she might like this classic?
D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths
