Morgan's Choice
Two alien ships respond to Morgan Selwood’s distress call, but the rescue turns out to be more than she bargained for.

If you enjoy fast-paced action-adventure in a space opera setting, this book is for you.

Reviewers say:
'Morgan’s Choice is an excellent blend of sci-fi and romance. Fantastic world building that’s easy to follow and charismatic characters who are absolutely fascinating.'

'Absolutely brilliant! I can completely appreciate a work of science fiction combining adventure, romance, politics, history and a few other things thrown in for good measure. “Morgan’s Choice” has all of that and is bound to appeal to the sci fi fans who like genre-hopping between hard-core space fiction, cyber-punk and “Foundation”-style political intrigue.'

Lissa The Edge of Darkness

At the end of the interstellar war, Max Ryan, an unwilling cyborg living on the Rock, a notorious prison planet, is rescued and sent to live on the transport ship Eden as it travels home to Old Earth.

Max never thought she'd be doing anything other than baking the ship's bread for the next five years. But when she uncovers a conspiracy bigger than the war that enslaved her in the first place, she is in for the fight of not only her life, but those around her she has grown to love.

A dystopian novel exploring the themes of love, class, race, gender, and power.

Review:
"The writing style is addictive and the characters are well written and very real. The dialogue has a vein of humour in them that appeals to me as it is fairly dry. But seriously... Kick ass female cyborg with an attitude... It's everything I look for in a Sci-Fi and more."

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) | 11 comments Source

It is the distant future. Humanity has expanded to fill every corner of the Solar System, over 100 billion people live on its many worlds, moons, orbital rings and asteroids. And after many generations of taxing the natural resources to their limit, a frightening has begun to set in. The most precious natural resource of all - water - is quickly running out! Humanity might be able to get by with recycling and rationing measures, but without new sources to tap, people will begin to die in the billions. When that happens, desperate measures need to be taken!

Source is a story that began as a Herscher Project contribution but which grew into a series in its own right. Thanks to Chris A Jackson who provided the theme, and to my many friends who have made the environment and the natural sciences their profession. In addition to inspiring the idea, they helped me to keep this story grounded in hard sci-fi wherever possible.

They're called hunters. Professional mercenaries licensed to track down, detain and even kill criminals. For years, they have been keeping the peace, patrolling the streets and putting the scum behind bars or in the ground. But after years of success, cracks are beginning to show in the hunters armor. With diminishing crime rates, competition between hunters is getting worse. And now that they are no longer cowering in fear, the people are beginning to demand that the hunters powers be revoked...

Liability is a story about crime, government, and the freedom to take matters into your own hands.

Reviews for Liability:
"Good story. Gets you wrapped up in the action right away and doesn't stop till the end."
"Dont look behind you when you read this novel, they may be watching you. thoroughly enjoyable reading."

Gretchen Hummel (ghummel) | 2 comments Dreamer's Island, USA Best Books Award Finalist 2012 by Gretchen Hummel

Dreamer's Island (USA Best Books Award Finalist 2012) is a post-apocalyptic novel of suspense, intrigue and humor.

Here's what Alison Baker, winner of three O. Henry awards said about it:

“In Dreamer’s Island Gretchen Hummel has created a rich, complex world that’s both beautiful and scary. Reading it, I found myself caught up in a lively and humorous community of artists, craftspeople, and dreamers—who are all too aware of the dangers that menace them from outside. I couldn’t put it down.”

Description:

In a post-plague, baby-hungry world Blair searches for her kidnapped daughter. She works as a tour guide on what mainlanders call Devil’s Island—all that’s left of a future San Francisco. The island is infamous for its high rate of plague survivors, its lively, thriving arts community, and its suspect spirituality.

Islanders are fascinated by mysterious “plague-gifts” – knowledge and skills acquired by surviving the plague and are covertly experimenting with the virus. Mainlanders abhor the mere mention of anything plague-related.

The island is quarantined, yet mainlanders Dr. Lourdes and his daughters insist on a visit. Their stated agenda is to shop the arts district and to adopt a child. But Dr. Lourdes’s curiosity about rumored plague virus experiments has Blair worried about the true purpose of their visit.

When the doctor’s youngest daughter contracts the plague, Blair must call on all her plague-gifts to help her survive. The girl’s fight for her life and Blair’s search for her own daughter dovetail in a startling conclusion that is beyond Blair’s wildest dreams.

Richard (ogresan) | 2 comments Our Lady of 47 Ursae Majoris and Other Stories

"Here for the first time, fantasist Richard Parks has collected eleven of his pure quill science fiction stories, including: "Keeping Lalande Station" about a colony scout who's been in space just a little too long. "The Great Big Out," concerns the future sport of Storm Riding and a life-changing decision by an aging master of the game. "Passing Zero Point," original to this volume, is about the dating scene in a future that's practically already here, and the title story, "Our Lady of 47 Ursae Majoris" explores the persistence of mystery and wonder in a totally rational universe. These stories and more make this a volume lovers of old and new school science fiction should not be without."

"Discovering Richard Parks's fiction is like discovering a wise zen master pumping gas at a service station or a weathered swami slinging burgers at your favorite corner diner: transcendence in the midst of the ordinary, right where it ought to be." - Terry McGarry, in Interzone

If anyone had told super model Rena Hilst she would find true love and happiness with someone twice her age, she would have laughed them out a window. Yet, there she was, at 22, living her dream as one of the fashion industry's top talents, in passionate love with her 43-year-old manager at Moonglow Model Management, Shell Dawes. From the outside, no cracks in the crystal of their relationship were apparent save for something on Rena's part:

Other women.

Rena never really hunted for people to cheat with but being far away from home on jobs with the most beautiful and interesting people on the planet occasionally led her to party too much and end up in another girl's bed. In fact, Rena repeatedly promised herself to stop straying on Shell. Then, at a fashion & celebrity elite gala, she meets Koko Dean and Lilly Morgan, 18-year-old best friends on the path to stardom in their own rights; Koko, an up-and-coming fashion model and Lilly, a musician with a knack for fashion design. Koko and Rena hit it off right away, which puts a damper on Lilly's plans of finally telling her best friend she loves her beyond the boundaries of friendship.

Rena finds herself wedged between an inclination to get to know Koko better or finally stay true to Shell. Feeling it's about time to change her ways, she opts for the latter but temptation won't let her off the hook that easily. Booze-fueled circumstances put her in line to stray yet again; this time, with her childhood best friend, Shannon Sadoveanu, a socialite who recently lost the love of her life by tragic means.

Shell had always put Rena's flings aside, chalking it up to necessary life experience for someone so young and free-spirited. She rationalized them as indiscretions of youth, fully believing that nothing -- especially a few meaningless affairs -- could rupture their love and bond. However, when she finds out what happened with Shannon, the crystal cracks. Something about it doesn't seem so meaningless. She feels the loss of Shannon's girlfriend may have opened the door to a hibernated love with Rena. Not sure how to deal, Shell wonders if she is to blame for tolerating Rena's occasional bouts of horseplay. For the first time in their four-year relationship, Shell questions the promise of "happily ever after." Together, they must finally confront the skeletons that have hung in their closet for far too long.

Set against the eclectic fictional cities of Moonglow, USA, and Utsukushisa, Japan, MOONGLOW will titillate your imagination, strum your heartstrings and prove that -- no matter what era we live in -- love is our strongest ally.

It's a depiction of next Panzer in line after the King Tiger, the Panzer VII, or Mause, that never went into production, with a boxy turret. Just thought it looked cool, and a good match for how the Hercules Heavy tank would look.

ONLY ONE MAN CAN SAVE THE PLANET; SMALL PROBLEM HE JUST DIED.

A very realistic science fiction thriller about the accidental discovery of mysterious, but mute, objects in the ocean in 1967 and what happened when they woke up in 1993 and began sending signals to outer space. Mike, pulled back into a clandestine agency to finish the job he began over twenty-three years ago as a. navy ensign , is strangely attacked by gangs of what look like ordinary Americans. Attacks he can handle, but he is shaken when he learns that a revered friend has died. Will the death of Mike's friend mean that the secret of these mysterious objects will be locked forever in the dark ocean bottom?

47 four and five star reviews on Amazon US and UK. Many more on other platforms.

This book is so realistic that readers often finish the book wondering, "if this story might not be fiction at all, but something very real and very disturbing."

Strongly recommended by noted U.S. book critic Alan Caruba, who says, "If you read just one novel in 2011, make it Falling Star."

Falling Star has sold over 4,400 copies since its release in August 2010.

We're not supposed to enter into discussion threads here, but I must counter the innuendo.

It was originally written as a short story in 1974, when the cause of depopulation was a nuclear holocaust. It was rewritten as a book in 75/76 and then rewritten many times.

Another interesting thing: The story features a villainess called "Serena" (and she was in the original short story from 1974). Both the story and early drafts of the book were sent out over the years to various publishers and would thus have been seen by people in the publishing industry.

Make of that what you will.

New Sci-Fi Novel Presents Lesson in Living

Author Gretchen Hummel releases debut novel to acclaim of fellow writers

DAVIDSON, N.C. – From Octavia E. Butler to Ursula K. Le Guin, the landscape of science fiction has erected a number of grande dames. While relative newcomer Gretchen Hummel has yet to claim a crown of her own, there is every indication that her own royal marriage to sci-fi infamy may not be far away.

In her first published novel Dreamer’s Island, Hummel leads readers through the streets and alleys of a future, post-plague San Francisco, which has been made an island by a massive earthquake. At the center of Dreamer’s Island is a mother’s unrelenting search for her daughter; at the bottom, an engaging look at fear, the resiliency of life and the intersection of the two.

The book’s heroine is Blair, a mother searching for her kidnapped daughter. She works as a tour guide on what mainlanders call Devil’s Island – all that’s left of San Francisco. The island is infamous for its high rate of plague survivors, its lively, thriving arts community and its suspect spirituality.

The girl’s fight for her life and Blair’s search for her own daughter dovetail in a startling conclusion.

Dreamer’s Island has already garnered attention among readers and writers:

“In Dreamer’s Island Gretchen Hummel has created a rich, complex world that’s both beautiful and scary. Reading it, I found myself caught up in a lively and humorous community of artists, craftspeople, and dreamers-who are all too aware of the dangers that menace them from outside. I couldn’t put it down.”

– Alison Baker, winner of three O. Henry Awards and author of Loving Wanda Beaver

Hummel is pleased with the attention and hopes readers walk away from the book with a stronger resolve. “We have to go through the shadow of fear to learn what it has to teach us,” says Hummel, “and it has a lot to teach if we don’t run away.”

About the Author
Gretchen Hummel has an MFA degree in Creative Writing and an MS degree in Psychiatric Nursing earned from the University of Utah in SLC and the University of NC at Chapel Hill. When a Dweller overlord sabotages the celestial link connecting Jamie to her own world, she vanishes from the signing, crumbling the negotiations, and sending her on a series of mind-bending, alternate-reality adventures. description It is the year 911 of the New Dawn.

In a future where horses are revered as gifts of the gods, and sheep and hounds are the beasts of burden, ancient magicks have been rediscovered. But there are those who wish to uncover the technology of the past and take control of the world for their own evil ends. Now, more than ever, the world needs a hero.

In the tiny hamlet of Ooze, a hapless, fish-faced, flaky-skinned youth named Pike is about to commence a quest: to win the heart of the fair maiden at the Pit of Zidor, and to release Moorlock the Warlock from the captivity of his mortal enemy. Accompanied by a garrulous sparrow and a belligerent horse, Pike is captured and then employed by the lisping Lord Nairey du Well in his sheep-drawn carriage, and then pursued by the deadly huntress, Scarlet Deadnight - du Well’s partner in tyranny.

Pike soon discovers:
- that fair maidens are not always female,
- that they can prove to be deadly foes, and
- the true value of a good moisturiser!

This comic fantasy turns the genre on its head and is a must for readers of all ages.

Paul Hardy | 1 comments So here's a story of apocalypse from an angle you won't have seen before...

The Last Man on Earth Club

Six people are gathered for a therapy group deep in the countryside. Six people who share a unique and terrible trauma: each one is the last survivor of an apocalypse.

Each of them was rescued from a parallel universe where humanity was wiped out. They’ve survived nuclear war, machine uprisings, mass suicide, the reanimated dead, and more. They’ve been given sanctuary on the homeworld of the Interversal Union and placed with Dr. Asha Singh, a therapist who works with survivors of doomed worlds.

To help them, she’ll have to figure out what they’ve been through, what they’ve suffered, and the secrets they’re hiding. She can’t cure them of being the last man or woman on Earth. But she can help them learn to live with the horrors they survived.

‘This one won't leave you with the warm and fuzzies, but it will leave you thinking, and for me that's the mark of great science fiction.’ – Sift Book Reviews

G.S. Hargrave (gshargrave) | 1 comments Doctor Ramani's Children and Other Stories
by G. S. Hargrave

This five story collection from Black Griffin Books consists of straight up science fiction, stories that might best be called fantasy, and a couple of tales with doors that open on both sides of the divide. Between the covers you'll find robotic dogs and telepathic cats, near future battlefields, dark Tibetan magic, genetic engineering and adventures in nanotechnology, the occasional haunting, and a cast of engaging and believable characters that will stay with you long after their final pages have been turned.

An extended excerpt from Bibliophiles, the final story in the collection, can be found here.

The book is available at Amazon in both print and a nicely formatted electronic edition. You can also read an excerpt from the title story there if you wish, by following the Amazon link and clicking on Look Inside.

Readers in the UK can find the electronic edition by clicking here.

Thanks much for having a look!

Doug Brown | 1 comments Hello Sci Fi fans. 8 years in the making, Paint By Numbers is out for ebook.

http://amzn.to/LQSO00

The first person to read it surprised the heck out of me with, "Doug, I just finished your book. Absolutely spellbinding! I didn't want to put it down to sleep! I highly recommend it! You are brilliant!" And she even bought it on her own. Now maybe my family will give it a try.

No spoilers from me beyond the official description, but I think you've probably never read anything quite like this. I know I haven't.

The mammoth computer Virgil has run the Earth’s net for more than a decade, protected by the unbreakable Mobius. Virgil has been so successful that the world’s dependence on it has become critical. This worries Hutch Axemeyer. Hutch, the troubled mathematical genius behind Mobius, is enlisted again by the World Security Authority after Mobius is proven to be not quite infallible by two teenage hackers. Susan Lo breaks into Mobius from sheer curiosity. Armand Pryther turns his hacking acumen into shady profits until he takes on the challenge of Mobius. It is perhaps no coincidence that all three were illegal genetic engineering products from a firm that sought to produce financial geniuses. Hutch doesn’t have to wait long to discover why the young prodigies are sent to him to mentor. A new object has come into the solar system and astronomers recognize that it is not the comet it was initially thought to be. Then Virgil has an unauthorized visitor accessing Mobius. Witness an epic mathematical war like Earth has never seen before as Hutch, Susan and Armand learn to Paint by Numbers.
