well Ive had 24 hours to think about this, and I still cant quite put my finger on the way I know the seasons affect my reading. I know they do, but its not so overt.
Interesting question! Autumn is very much about gothic/horror/creepy, not because of Halloween (since that is a holiday I basically ignore) but because it fits how the season feels for me - darkness, gloom, cold, an encroaching feeling of death and entrapment.
Winter doesn't really have a theme, but it's definitely the season when I read the most, simply because I want to do something...anything!...to run away from the horrid awful terrible miserable cold and the fact that going outside is a feat of epic heroism.
Spring is often, though not always, best for lighter and shorter reads because I'm restless and distractible and suffering from a horrible winter hangover.
Summer reading depends entirely on my schedule for that particular year - some years I'm busy and read very little, other years I'm not doing much of anything and have plenty of time to read.
Currently Seasons make no difference to my random walk pattern of reading and I dont think they influence volume of reading either. Location perhaps is a factor, eg holiday on/off/near, but that's more entwined with wanting to donate books to the library. In my heart it is always winter, which for me is a positive !
Now that it is possible to sit on a bench and read for a while in the still small warmth of the sun,I can't wait until its warm enough to get horizontal on the grass, under a tree. Leaves are on their way!
Feliz navidad and Merry Christmas to AllMy wish for us this year is that we can generate some discussions as exciting as it was when we were just starting.
May we all find some exciting new reads under our trees

thanks Ellie, hope you have wonderful holiday
I got two Doctor Who books and the gift of extended family in Missouri. How happy am I?Merry Christmas to everyone!
I hope you had a Merry Christmas, everyone, and wishing you a happy and fruitful new year for 2014. :)Btw! During our Christmas get together, I downloaded 230 Gigabytes worth of movies from my brother's external hard drive he had with him, and so, I must admit that family and movie viewing have been interfering somewhat with my reading. *blush*
Received a 'Where's Dr Who' book that I will enjoy with the grandsons.Happy New Year (now somewhere in the world)
We had a wonderful Christmas spent out in Missouri with my stepdaughter, her husband, her small adorable chidren, and my brother-in-law (even my husband's last wife-everyone but him was invited, lol). It was a total blessing! And coming home has been wonderful too-I received 2 books I really, really wanted: The Arcades Project and Simon Van Booy's The Illusion of Separateness. And I got my daughter's deepest desire: a juicer. We are a slightly odd family! Only my son, with his issues of Breaking Bad and art supplies seems relatively normal.Hope you all are well too, Ice, Traveller, and Magdelanye and have a Happy New Year!!

To paraphrase Ellie,Many good reads in the new year!
The seasons don't affect my reading selections at all! I am usually reading a novel and a non-fiction book simultaneously. I like non-fiction partly because I don't have to stay engaged with the characters or story. I don't even have to read all of it, rather just the sections I find interesting.
hey Pam! not sure how you found your way here, but I'm glad you did. like you, I always like to have at least two books going, and attempt to balance fiction and non fiction. in the summertime however I go for more fiction and shorter books that can be carried and dipped into in settings that might be distracting in the reading of some work that requires more attention.
Pam, I hope you will find other notions to play with within this group. how did you find out about us?
Hi Magdelayne - I responded to someone's post about a book we both read and, just out of curiosity, I looked at the person's groups and this was one of them. (At least that's what I think happened!) It sounded interesting, so I joined it!
we havent been recruiting, or even active much in the last few years. three of the members started other groups and the energy kinda dissipated. however, a few of us still connect this way and we have considered widening the circle. Ice Bear and Ellie might be busy with Sept things but I trust they will catch up as they can. I will be interested in your responses to the questions we have posed, and any you might have.

I am walking better every day although I way overdid it last Friday and am still paying the price. I start work tomorrow so let's hope I'm doing "well enough" to get through the week. And we're (me and my daughter) are going to the U.S.Open this weekend-again, hopefully I'll be able to manage it all.
I hope I'll be able to keep my reading going now that I'm going back to work. This summer really spoiled me. You'd think I'd feel ready to work again but there are so many other things I want to do! But I'm going to be positive, at least for now.
just get some...the homeopathic pills in combination with the gel really speeded up my dads recovery.
I love spring: it's a snow day here in NYC. No school. Just lots of reading. I may (eventually) finish the book I'm reading for a challenge (the only reason I'm sticking with it; although I really like this author I'm not liking this book so much, The Quick and the DeadThis doesn't count the reading/studying I'm doing for my TCI (therapeutic crisis intervention) workshop. Big test on Tuesday so I'm trying but folks, it doesn't look good! My memory is not what it used to be.
But a snow day helps everything. Plus I love seeing my cats curled up throughout the house enjoying the fleece blankets.

Glad you are reading again Ellie but what don't you like about the Joy Williams book....I looked it up and it does seem intriguing. sorry tho to correct you, my dad is actually dead. It was years before that, when he had his last hip replacement
I'm really sorry about your dad. I finished the Williams. It is very intriguing and I think I ended up liking it's dark humor and quirky characters. But the characters were hard to like and some of what happened was difficult to read. I think I prefer her short stories.
Holding you all in my heart as the sun stand still and begins its return loopsolstice greetings
peace
love
good vibes
YesterdayI had my first glorious layabout on the grass in the yard here. The wind blew and the ground is still pretty cold but it was an hour of bliss.Hope others are starting to be able to experience this!
Not quite the solstice, but extending special greetings in honour of the moment.
Nice afternoon, Magdelanye! I believe you are the first of us to layabout on the grass this Spring! It has been warmer these past two days here, but not dry enough for laying about outside yet.....but that time is close......I can feel it. I will join you on the grass very soon. We'll soak up the sunshine.
The seasons are rushing by, a bit like my retirement, in 3 months just about to take my 3rd holiday !
Here it seems otherwiseSpring is unfolding slowly in the cold parts. The weather warms than the temp plunges.
BUT today the sun is shining and I am going to the library.
Your retirement on the other hand will be on you before you know it
Ice, you'll enjoy retirement. It's wonderful. I live in the same province as Magdelanye, so our weather is similar. One day there's some warmth in the air, the next day there's an iciness. Today has some warmth to it.
I went out for a jog to take advantage of the sun. Lots of crocuses and the daffodils are starting to push out of the soil. Spring is here; the warmth should follow soon.
curious to note that we four have all wondered about retirement here on flight paths and now Ice will be joining that club.I join Ellie and Petra in agreeing it's wonderful but also challenging. And I do wonder why there is still notenoygh time to reado
Back from 2 weeks with the family in Orlando, and back to the daily chaos of retirement ! The Garden is springing into life .....

It's funny though: the summer is when I tackle my big, serious books because I have time. Fall is for lighter reads. Non-fiction is probably the genre I read in most because I can turn my attention on and off and don't have to maintain relationships with the characters.
I never thought of this before now-totally subconscious. I have to keep reading but my reading gets (to my way of thinking) to bios, etc. so my major focus can remain energized for work.
By winter, I can usually start doing more of the kind of reading I love: complex fiction that takes more energy than opening the covers. I'll have to pay attention to see what I do in the spring!
Thanks, K.
