Sharilyn | 5 comments The last sentence of the book really sums up the new life Naomi had built for herself, "I was becoming who I was meant to be, the Naomi Soledad Leon Outlaw of my wildest dreams" (246). Naomi finally found her voice and she was able to express herself in ways she had struggled to before.

I loved the radish carving contest! I would love to go to a festival like that. I think taking second place in that competition was a turning point for Naomi. I think she discovered hope, joy, and love, all in that one victory.

It was really great to see the relationship that was built between Naomi and Santiago. Even though they had been separated for years, it was like they had never been apart. They are so much alike in their talents and it was fun to see their ideas come together when they were working on their soap/wood carvings.

Thank God Naomi didn't end up living with her crazy mom and Clive...and Skyla truly disgusts me the way she outcasts Owen. She didn't want him because "he had so many problems." That is just plain sad.

What a wonderful book! LOVE, LOVE LOVED it!

Nga | 5 comments I'm glad that Naomi found and used her inner voice and strength, especially when talking to the judge. I'm very relieved that Skyla did not win custody of Naomi or Owen. I'm surprised that Gram was only 68 years old; I thought she might have been older since she is their great grandmother but nonetheless, she is old. As bad as her mother behaved, I liked how Naomi does not hate her mother and even entertains a slight possibility that her mother might visit and braid her hair again. Naomi is mature for not resenting her mother and this will allow her to grow healthy into her new life.

I am so happy that Santiago is back in Naomi and Owen's life and has a sound head on his shoulder. He sounds like a responsible and caring adult. Although the children does not live with Santiago, there is promise of frequent and routine contact. Moreover, Naomi knows that he loves and wants them both.

I loved how Naomi learns so much new culture in Mexico; I feel like I learned some more of the Mexican culture through the book.

Overall, this a great book! I loved how it has many layers and the layers are weaved so fluidly in the reading like Jill had shared. I loved how it depicts family in a wider sense. I like the message of there are hope, beauty, and purpose underlying what seems to be flaws and tragedies.
