To Kill a Mockingbird
a novel by Harper Lee
ASSIGNMENT I for October 24, 2008 pp 3 - 32

Remember to pick out one sentence, or paragraph from the week’s reading that you especially like.

Who is the narrator of this story?

The first several pages give a general, historical background for the story. On page 6, we meet some of the characters. Who is Jem?

Who is Calpurnia? What a great description 2nd paragraph, page 6!!

Top of page 6, how do Scout & Jem rate their father?

Bottom of page 6 onto page 7, who is Dill?

How old are Jem, Scout, and Dill?

Bottom of page 9: the Radley house has no screen doors. What is the significance of that?

Why did Boo Radley live in his parents’ house from age 16 to age 31? Why did he move to the courthouse basement and why did he move back to his parents’ house?

Boo Radley was a strange young man. On pages 10 & 11, there are two accounts of trouble he got into

Middle of page 12, how did Calpurnia describe Mr. Radley?

What was Jem’s “reasonable description” of Boo Radley?

Page 14, what was Jem’s excuse for not going in Radley’s yard?

Page 17: why did everyone in the first grade already know the alphabet on the first day of school?

Pages 20 – 21; what did it mean when Scout told her teacher, Miss Caroline, that “Walter is a Cunningham”?

On page 24: Calpurnia lectured Scout about how to treat company. What did she say?

At the top of page 25, Scout got her second smack of the day. What was smack # 1 and smack # 2?

On pages 25 & 26: what made Miss Caroline scream?

Miss Caroline was learning about the community where she had accepted a teaching job. She got her second revelation of the day: “… he’s one of the Ewells, ma’am.” What did that mean?

On page 30, Atticus told Scout: “If you can learn a certain trick, you’ll get along better with a lot of folks.” What was “the trick”?

Did you pick out a sentence, or paragraph from the week’s reading that you especially like? Where?
