Why is this so good? Everyone gives it 4-5 stars! Is it funny? Is it simply fabulous writing? Could you quote a chapter for me so I get what is so great about this author. Thanks!

Laura my sincere apologies....

message 11: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie No problem. After you said that I was worried that the author had to be Brazilian, but this didn't seem to be the case with other wountries so I didn't know what to think. Anyhow I loved the book.

Machado de Assis is one of the most important writers in the Portuguese Language and some people say that he is the best brazilian writer ever (in Brazil we have a lot of fantastic writers like Mario de Andrade, Érico Veríssimo, Guimarães Rosa and others).

This book is available in Public Domain. Chrissie, do you speak portuguese? I have a portuguese version.

message 15: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Thanks for your offer, but I do not speak Portugese. I will check out the other Brazilian writers also.

Paula Savioli (shaulablack) | 3 comments Lucíola by José de Alencar
Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis -> a famous classic of the Brazilian literature
Libertinagem / Estrela da Manhã by Manuel Bandeira - I don't know if this one has an English translation. Maybe it does, I just don't know the title

And for those who want some 20th century Brazilian literature:
anything by Hilda Hilst
The wedding dress by Nelson Rodrigues
anything by Fernando Sabino - very good
Agosto by Rubem Fonseca (in French it's called "un été brésilien" - a Brazilian summer - and in English it should be "August", although it's winter in August in Brazil
all poetry by Carlos Drummond de Andrade
any chronicle by Rachel De Queiroz

Machado de Assis is a classic Brazilian writer. We read him for school. And what is so good about him is that he's a good story teller, even though his themes are a bit old-fashioned. By the way, I think Dom Casmurro is way better than the quoted book.

Ram | 5 comments Which of these books are in English or translated into english?

message 23: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Ana, I switched to Dom Casmurro instead! Thanks.
