Persephone Books discussion

Persephone rates are going up at the middle of the month, according to that last email from them. Gina, I was wondering if you or anyone wanted to note some titles they might be interested in discussing in near future here in this thread just as random small discussions? I guess we don't have time to have an official poll, but I thought if anyone had matching tastes on any books, people might be ordering about now.

I will look at the catalog today and possible pick a couple. I can't afford to order many, and I know we may not be interested in the same ones, I just thought we could post here and see?

Interestingly enough I just placed an order this morning as I am going to a talk at Persephone shortly.
I have ordered - Cheerful Weather for the Wedding.- for the lunch.

No ,I haven't read any of these- but always happy to- had a quick look in the last Biannual and they all look interesting. I have just finished The Winds of Heavenas I went to a talk about that as well. Took photos last time I was there.

Yes , I am in the UK just south of London and Persephone is one of my indulgences on my day off- I try to go there every couple of months

Good for you! I would too if in your location. I am in the MidSouth, United States. I do love the Persephone publications though.

Maybe we'll get some more feedback from Gina and others here as the day goes by.

Sarah, I enjoyed The Family Roundabout, but wasn't bowled over. I know this is a favorite/top of the list read for some, so guess it depends on your tastes. I've been thinking about ordering a couple-- guess I d better get my order in.

Susan, I think then I am dropping Family Roundabout and adding Gina's The Far Cry. And I already have read Sack of Bath, that we have in common with Caroline. I still have to decide the absolute 3 though. Thanks ladies, off to bed to sleep on it!

Since we've had people express interest in The Far Cry, The Winds of Heaven and The Sack of Bath, why don't we just add those to our to-read shelf, instead of doing a poll? Does anyone have an objection to that? Then everyone will have a chance to purchase these books before the prices go up.
By the way, Sarah--I really enjoyed Family Roundabout...I thought it was a fascinating story!

No objection here, Gina :) And, by the way, I should be starting 'Hostages to Fortune' in a few days...

I've read all but The Carlyles at Home. Of the others I enjoyed The New House and Doreen most though all of them were good and worth reading.

All right, sounds good! We'll do Sack of Bath in Feb, Far Cry in Mar, and Winds of Heaven in Apr.

Sarah C, You inspired me to get my order in, too. I've enjoyed their non-fiction choices so have The Gardeners Nightcap and Good Things in England along with House-Bound (with its Penelope Fitzgerald connection) on the list. I did the six month thing because I enjoy a surprise in my mailbox :>)

Susan, great! I have been tempted by the 6-month package before, I bet it will win me over one of these days. haha I will have to look up the ones you listed. I was interested in your mention of Penelope Fitzgerald, will have to look at that. I have only read her Human Voices. Do you have other recommendations?

Sarah, I really liked and would recommend The Bookshop and Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald and her book of essays about books and other topics called The Afterlife. I enjoyed Human Voices, but but those are my favorites so far. :>) I'm curious to read the Persephone book by her aunt, Housebound.

As per today's Post http://thepersephonepost.blogspot.com/ there will be a Persephone event at Caffe Reggio 119 MacDougal on Friday 28th October at 11 a.m. This will celebrate Helen Hull and the Heterodoxy Club that met at Polly's along the road. It would be so great if a few New Yorkers could make it!
