Zhol i was tottaly suprised

iomai IKR. i thought he was the dude who killed Abby's bestie.

Mercutio I was surprised that a ghost could eat cookies.
Not that he was a ghost.

Sandy I wasn't surprised he was a ghost but it didn't occur to me that he was one either. He seemed too perfect so I knew there was something otherworldly about him.

Ken I was surprised that the book had such a weak "twist ending."

Emily i thought he was going to be a vampire, and i was like "aw man, that ruined it", but a ghost is way better in my opinion.

Emily Ken wrote: "I was surprised that the book had such a weak "twist ending.""

How so?

message 8: by Ken (new) - rated it 1 star

Ken Woo, he was a ghost! Except his incoporeality doesn't apply to cookies? Or drawing supplies? And the only reason it was a surprise was because the heroine trusted a complete stranger from sentence #1? (Seriously, a completely naturally occurring lock of black hair on a head of blond and she doesn't think it's even a little bit weird? The least she could do is question, just for a second, whether he was using hair dye.)

No mention of ghosts or anything supernatural through 500 agonizing, unnecessary pages of school projects, part-time jobs, shopping, and Oh No A Secret Boyfriend!? only to end with "EVERYONE WAS DEAD THE WHOLE TIME TUNE IN FOR THE SEQUEL!" No. No I won't, thanks.

Anastasia シ i was completely surprised, it seemed as though he was an actual living person.

Mercutio Mostly he seemed like a living person because he ate cookies and painted and made out with chicks and a variety of things ghosts CAN'T do.
If it's a surprise and I'm sure it counts as one, it's not the result of literary mastery, it's the fact that the author somehow forgot she was writing in a freaking ghost.

It isn't good writing to say, "oh, he's only a ghost when it's convenient" and apparently snickerdoodles supercede the eternal misery of undeath evertlasting?
Like, the whole CONFLICT is that he's a freakin ghost, but half the time he isn't even beholden to the repercussions of being a ghost!

ALSO if he's a gosh-darned ghost how come he had his doofy ghost hair from his life?

message 11: by Juli (new) - rated it 4 stars

Juli it explains most of all of that stuff in the 2nd book.

message 12: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy I was surprised. I mean I knew there was going to be something up with him and then I kinda suspected that he was but when it came to the revelation I was surprised. And what made this different from most supernatural books is that Abby thought she was going crazy. I thought that was a nice change from other books where they're like "oh you're a vampire well let's carry on making out anyway" Abby questions her sanity which I loved!! And Caspian eats the cookie cause he doesn't wanna upset Abbie and in fact it doesn't taste good to Caspian. I really like this series cause it was different from other stuff I had read.

message 13: by Juli (new) - rated it 4 stars

Juli yeah i totally agree with you

That would be great, if there were anything in the first book that made me want to continue on to the second. As it is, I was bored, confused, and frustrated.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I actually wasn't that surprised - firstly, the blurb gave it away (the "questioning her sanity" thing? A dead giveaway) then the way he wouldn't touch Abbey (except on his death day) made me suspicious, too.
Many loose threads are explained in the second book, and I loved the third. But it wasn't until I have reread the first book that I started liking it. At first I thought it was boring, too ;)

Ellie i knew something was definetly up with Caspian, but a ghost?? That gave me something to wrap my head around. At first I thought that Caspian was hiding his true first name and was actually D. from Kristen's diary and that he wanted to kill Abbey like he killed Kristen. I was obviously wrong.

Wow, that would have been creepy!

Ohhhhhhh so that's why haha. I get it.

message 20: by Jessica (last edited Jan 08, 2012 04:52AM) (new)

Jessica sooo random that he can draw and eat cookies and still not able to touch people

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, technically he can eat cookies but he says in the second book that he does not enjoy the taste of them because they taste like ashes.
But it is weird that he can pick up a pencil but can't touch people.

Heidi Also it's weird how Nickolas can touch her... he's a shadow too.

Emily Yeah. I don't get how Caspian can't touch people, but he can pick things up...

message 36: by Sami (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sami Dodge no not really you could tell from the start realy, it was not a book i would read over and over again

message 37: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna I knew Caspian was a shady character, so I waa kind-of suprised. The book was slow, I admit to that, but I just wanted to see what happened. A book that slow has to have some sort of surprise, even though everyone Abbey meet in the book ended up dead. Since I was really confused, I ended up having to read the next book. I don't like a story that leaves you questioning it.

Cierra I was surprised. I always thought he was a little weird, but seriously hot. I was wondering like, how come he never touches her? That time when she was crying in the cemetery in front of him, I thought that any guy who saw their friend-girl cry would hug her and comfort her. He didn't touch her. He just stood there and watched Abby cry. And then I found out he was a ghost and I was like, Ooooohh! So that's why he hasn't touched her! LOL It was a bit of a shock, but I always knew there was something weird about him, so....

Diana yea i was suprised,so many things i didn't get then it made since and i was like oh lol

Annie Laperriere I wasn't sure at first then as i read on, i had doubts then they were confirmed. It was an excellent series.

message 41: by Tye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tye I wasn't surprised. I kind of figured he was one before starting the book.

Emma i knew there was SOMETHING up, but i didn't figure he was a ghost. They kissed, so how could he be a ghost? (of course, this was all explained later on)

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Totally knew it. This book was terrible.

Kelsy Flanders Flesheating D-Ray wrote: "I was surprised that a ghost could eat cookies.

But thing is that he does not really eat the cookies, he saved them.

Amelia ╰☆╮☾ℌḯ☺ღα ╰☆╮ wrote: "IKR. i thought he was the dude who killed Abby's bestie."

i know right? He was acting so suspicious .... i knew something was going on... but i wasn't counting on him being a ghost... i was like seriously? how could they not have touched at all until their first kiss? Not even by accident when they were sitting under the tree or something? how does that work?

Amelia Megha wrote: "I like that she gave the ghosts the realism of people. And by the way, I didnt finish the book yet so I just had a major spoiler..:D"

Sorry for spoiling! but don't worry there are plenty of surprises to look forwward to in the second and third books!!!

✨Cassie ✨ I love the whole series and no I wasn't surprised, you could tell it was going to happen like that.

message 48: by Brenda (new)

Brenda I was guessing he was going to be something supernatural but I was surprised he was a ghost.

message 49: by TrinBrin (new)

TrinBrin No, because you just told me the ending. Thanks alot :(

message 50: by Misty (new) - rated it 1 star

Misty I couldn't finish this book. It was awful. I bought the whole series because the synopsis sounded pretty interesting and the cover art was beautiful. Luckily I was able to trade it. Such a disappointment.
