Hey all, just curious, what are some scary PNR or UF books to read that are not by Steven King? I'm looking for something to get in the mood for Halloween :D

Lord Loss is YA urban fantasy, We Hear the Dead is YA historical paranormal (not really romance though), The Thief of Always is mostly just dark fantasy but Clive Barker is always a good choice for something scary. Beyond the Night is a post-apocalyptic zombie romance but the caveat I have to make is that her books aren't for everyone and this series isn't my favorite.

That's about all I've got, I don't get scared by books much, but you've read a few that I would have recommended (Anna, Forest of Hands and Teeth) already so maybe you'll like these ones as well.

: )

Weep Not for the Vampire by William Veselik (not much romancy type stuff in there, but I liked it)

For horror comedy, seriously consider Jeff Strand! He's a genius! In fact, he finaled for the Stoker award back in 2005 or so that Stephen King ultimately won, so you can guess how good he is to final next to King. Like the books above, you can find a lot of Jeff's work at Mundania Press.

You could try my book, TYGERS. That's horror erotic romance. Also, my Urban Grimms are urbanized dark fairy tales (erom, also). They're titled:
Catch Me, If You Can (based on "The Hare and the Hedgehog")
Three Wishes (based on "The Three Little Men in the Wood")
The Temptation of Eve (based on "Snake Leaves")

All of these books are available in print and ebook http://underthemoon.org/brennalyons.html

A GREAT anthology of urbanized fairy tales (some are horror) is Grim and Grimmer. It's available from Mundania and contains a bunch of incredible writers, including Gary K Wolf (of Who Censored/Framed Roger Rabbit fame).

If you don't mind straight horror and horror comedy, you can try...

I love Lord Loss. It's very scary and excellent!

It ended up being so much different from what I had thought it would be, and it actually really reminded me of Clive Barker's stuff. Sarah, I think you'd really like it, and it's a short book and most likely available at your library so it doesn't require a whole lot of time or money invested.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I got a Barker vibe with some Lovecraft thrown in.

Nairabell | 193 comments The Harrowing scared the pants off me last summer. It's not really UF, more straight horror with a mean ass ghost. It has mixed reviews but I think I enjoyed it as it's written by a screenwriter so reads more like a horror movie than a novel.

Schay Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist

I wouldn't call it scary, but it seriously creeped me out O_O

I actually got my boyfriend Lord Loss, so I might steal that and read it ^_^ Also, I don't usually get scared by books either.. I just want something to put me in the halloween-y mood.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Lord Loss is fun but pretty thrilling. I think it's a brilliant idea.

I LOVE Alexandra Sokoloff The Harrowing was wonderful, and there's The Unseen which is really great too. And that one is based on a actual events.

I haven't seen The Unseen (no pun intended) but being based on true events makes it sound extra scary! Have you read The Price?

I haven't read The Price, but I have seen it at my local bookstore. I am a little nervous about the topic. I am interested in Book of Shadows

Also Joe Hill is Stephen King's son. And his books have some scray elements. The only one I've read is Heart-Shaped Box and it wasn't bad. I wasn't scared, but my scary thresh hold is pretty high.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I'm reading Ghost Road Blues (Pine Deep, #1) by Jonathan Maberry , and it's good horror. Lots going on. But human and inhuman monsters.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 21 comments The Ruins by Scott B. Smith was very creepy. Made into a movie. Of course, the book is better, but they did a pretty good job on the movie.
