The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments I've always had problems with insomnia. Sometimes it is terrible, but it does give me more time than more people to read since sometimes I'll go weeks with only getting 2-4 hours of sleep per day.

Anyone else have chronic insomnia?

Or is it just me and the main character from Fight Club? And I don't even get to have Brad Pitt as my alternate personality.

message 2: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Dermott (shannondermott) Sometimes, like today. It's 3am and I'm up. I guess I'll read.

Well, it is almost 3:00 in the morning my time, but I have to admit I'm up more because this is the only time I get to be by myself rather than because I can't sleep (I guess I'm just a night-owl)

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments It gets pretty crazy sometimes. I think I've went more than 100 hours straight without sleep before. You become very productive and unproductive at the same time.

message 5: by Shannon (last edited Oct 08, 2011 12:02AM) (new)

Shannon Dermott (shannondermott) I haven't stayed up that long in a while. But this waking period right now for me is going to make me unproductive tomorrow.

message 6: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (solyndra) At the beginning of the year I went 5 months with about 2 or 3 hours of sleep per night, sometimes less. It's funny, I would go into this numb mindstate and that was actually quite useful for work.. I didn't mind what I was doing and my subconscious was informed enough to do the work without active thought. (Yay for easy classes at uni?) I read a lot of books too, my concentration improved majorly.

I don't think my insomnia was chronic, since I haven't suffered from it for a while now, but it might come back someday.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) the longest i've gone was five days. apparently after three days you're supposed to start hallucinating and the insomnia starts getting to your head, but that never happened with me

message 8: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I've never been able to function without sleep. The only nights in which I'm not able to sleep are those when the wind is tto strong and the house moves too much. And I'm not able to read in tohse nights.
Usually, if I want to read in the night I fall sleep after reading two or three pages :(

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments Sarah wrote: "the longest i've gone was five days. apparently after three days you're supposed to start hallucinating and the insomnia starts getting to your head, but that never happened with me"

I've never had real hallucinations, but sometime I'll see movement out of the corner of my eye when nothing is there.

yeah, same. i don't think i'm going to meet my split personality and start fights in basement bars any time soon.

message 11: by Cari (new)

Cari (pikaprincess) | 3 comments I've been like this a lot lately. Last night I didn't fall asleep until 4am, then night before 6am. I usually can't sleep until I'm fully exhausted and about to pass out. I'm usually reading while I'm awake, keeps me from thinking about other things.

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments In a way that wouldn't be too bad. Like someone else working out for you. haha

After "A Game of Thrones" I am going to read Disturb. It is about a pill that replaces sleep.

I'm not sure if I'm a good friend to have on here or an annoying one. That will be the second book in like 24 hours that I got you to put on your to-read list.

Hopefully you aren't trying to get through all of your to-reads...

i'm almost positive there's no way i will ever get through all of the books in my to-read section, but i have enough spare time that i should get through most of them. and i love having new book recs, so don't even worry!

My problem is that no matter how fast I get through a book, I seem to still find 5 books that I want to read. By next year I'll have 1000 books I need to read.

that's definitely my problem too. no matter how quickly i read or how many books i get through, i constantly find even more to add and my list is impossible to complete.

Maybe we should start listening to audiobooks while we are sleeping. haha

Yea, but I usually get into a point where my eyes get really tired and I can't read anymore.

somehow that never happens with me. usually when i start reading, i become even more awake than usual, which probably explains why it's so hard for me to sleep. especially now that i have a nook and the light keeps me awake easier

I just become wide awake when I try to go to sleep. So basically I can tell if I will fall asleep within 5 minutes of laying down. Because otherwise I am wide awake.

oh, if i try to fall asleep, it never works. i usually lay there and get restless and end up reading or sitting on the internet until morning, and then i don't see the point in sleeping all day, so i usually just stay up.

People who don't have troubles sleeping never understand why you'd sleep during the day. Even when I worked from 10 PM to 7 AM people who call me during the day and they'd be like "why are you sleeping? It's 2 in the afternoon!".

i get that all the time, haha. especially when i had school. i remember not sleeping for three or more days and the next day in school i was only awake during passing time, so roughly 30 minutes. but i was fine by the time i got home, haha

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments It was really nice/bad in college. I'd hangout with friends until late and then do my work instead of sleeping. The bad part was every once in awhile I'd crash and sleep through all my classes.

message 27: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) that's what i did in school, too. i'd be up all day doing whatever i wanted and then by around two or three in the morning i'd start doing my work. most of the time i only really slept on the weekends

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments Yea, those were times it was nice that I could never sleep. But it can be terrible when you are bored and can't sleep. Then you just have more bored hours to fill.

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) that's what books were made for, obviously

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments I'm usually bored because I don't have any books to read at the time. I usually end up watching the history channel to add to my nerdness.

message 31: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) haha, not nerdy at all. and i have enough ebooks stored up so that if i were to ever run out of physical books to read, i'd still have some way of reading

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments I think my brain sabotages the e-book experience for me. I love holding a real book in my hands so much that every time I tried to read on something else it just isn't the same.

I've tried reading e-books that my friends gave me on my computer, but I get distracted way easier than if I was reading a hard-copy book.

message 33: by Linda (new)

Linda (lindacee) | 392 comments Mod
Me too! Its quite annoying really, since I've found so many free ebooks.

i felt the same way as you for a long time, but having an e-reader can be a lot more convenient at times. for a few months i completely stopped reading real books and stook strictly to ebooks. now i've switched it up again and have an enormous stack of real books next to my bed that need reading while i practically avoid my e-reader. i do love them both though

I have a really large bed, but half the bed is full of books that I've read while trying to go to sleep. I'll read for awhile, then put the book on one side of the bed and try to sleep. Then repeat until I actually sleep. haha

haha, oh god. that's actually kind of cute that you just sleep in a bed full of books, albeit probably extremely uncomfortable hahah

No, I have plenty of room to spread out. I could be 20 times lazier will putting books back. haha

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) | 6 comments Oh how i wish i had insomnia so i could have more time to read and read nights. Im feeling like why is the only 24 hours in a day heh. I dont have time to read anything bigger than comics book volume if its not for Uni class.

I truly envy me from a year ago who had more time to read.

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments Another night of insomnia for me. Not the fun kind either. I don't really feel the greatest and just want to sleep.

For whatever reason I just can't fall asleep.

don't worry, i'm up with you :/

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments What are you up to?

I'm plodding my way through A Game of Thrones but my attention span is gone.

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) i'm in the process of downloading as many scary movies i possibly can so when i run out of the books i have stacked up, i'll have something to do with my nights

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments Find a good horror movie can be tough sometimes.

Do you mind movies with subtitles? Because two of my favorite are foreign horror films.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) i've had a dozen different lists of recs, so hopefully i'll find some that i enjoy.

and nah, i don't mind at all. what are they?

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments A tale of two sisters - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/

[rec] - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/

and an american movie that wasn't very scary but still okay was Trick R Treat

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0862856/

message 46: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) thank you (: and dont worry, i'm already downloading trick r treat.

i don't get scared by horror movies so i can watch pretty much any of them and not be too judgmental

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments I only like 2 kinds of horror movies:

1: Something well put together and subtle
2: Something so bad that you can laugh at it.

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) it's pretty hard to find the former, though. i'm mostly into psychological thrillers because they're a lot less cheesy and predictable than typical horror movies

The Nate Gatsby (macenro) | 97 comments That is why I usually like foreign horror better. American horror movies people complain if you don't see the monster/killer/whatever all the time. I think it adds suspense when you don't know what is trying to kill them.

Have any favorite horror films?

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (electrahearts) tbh i haven't really checked out many foreign films at all, but i'm eventually going to run out of good horror movies to watch, so i'll take that into consideration (:

i'm really into movies about serial killers, especially hannibal lector. not sure if those technically count, but i'm addicted haha
