RandomAnthony | 14536 comments So I was at Michael's (the store) a couple days ago and I bought some charcoal pencils and some paper specific to that medium.

I want to start drawing...mainly as stress relief and to get out of my head.

Any advice? Anyone pick up anything like this although they've had little experience? What did you get out of it?

Sarah, I heard you were acting again, by the way...good for you...

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, RA, I did that with (acrylic) painting for a while. It really does get you out of yourself. I suck as a painter. (In fact, some of my stuff would fit right in at that bad painting museum in Boston...) But I enjoyed working on it, even though I never took any painting classes -- ever.

(I always hated the clean-up afterward though. I think that's why I stopped doing it. I'm such a whiner though because it's a hell of a lot easier than working with oil paints.)

Michelle (ingenting) RA, I know I keep harassing you about this, but you should really try yoga. It's great stress relief, it's fun, and the breathing is designed to get you to focus on something besides the chatter in your head.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I like to get it all out with a tambourine!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I draw some, but not lately. I also play piano, and that really does get me out of myself. I also love puzzles, crossword puzzles and acrostics.

They exercise your brain and are quasi-educational.

I'm seriously thinking about trying yoga these days. My current job has me sitting in front of a computer for hours, and my neck and shoulders are suffering. I really feel it by Friday.

One day out of curiosity of what it would be like to be able to cook, I just went and picked a recipe and tried. I made a few miserable messes and sometimes stumbled on successes. In time, though, cooking has become a relaxing, soothing time filler. When I have a whole day of reading/grading ahead of me I will usually have something bubbling on the stove and baking in the oven while I read. It helps me to stay focused, while giving me periodic breaks.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I love to cook, but I don't do it as much as I should. I had a boyfriend for 7ish years and I used to cook all the time, then, for us or for friends. It's really pathetic that I can't just do it for myself.

I especially love to cook soup.

message 8: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I wish I felt inspired to cook, I mostly feel inspired to suggest things for others to cook for me. But, I have picked up painting (oils) after a six-year break. It's really hard, especially not being in a class, but I am starting to get the hang of it again and it's totally making me stupid-happy.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You're right, Michelle, maybe I'll swing by the library today and get a yoga DVD. And, you know, actually watch it this time. Maybe it'll help my knee. Yoga is one of those things I know I should do and don't get around to doing. My bad.

I also almost bought paints but yeah, I need something I can do for a couple minutes then put away...I haven't touched the pencils yet. They're sitting on my shelf looking promising. I'm ok with that for the moment.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Kickball!!!

Books Ring Mah Bell I have nothin'.

*sigh*

I love museums and art shows so I can enjoy the creative outlets of other people.

This is the yoga tape I used to do in the morning in my college days. It's so cheesy, but I loved it! I liked starting my day with a Southern accent and jokes about biscuits and gravy!

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Anthony, I have been acting again, and I'm also back in voice lessons. I just finished playing Emma Goldman in the musical version of Ragtime. Tonight we have auditions for Oklahoma!, which I am directing with my husband (he's directing, I'm assisting).

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

RA, did you get some blending stumps and kneaded rubber? Because the blending stumps make charcoal much more fun. Plus, if you didn't pick up any fixative, steal your wife's hairspray. If you don't spray it when you're done, you'll just end up with charcoal everywhere!

Charcoal may be my favorite medium to play with, mainly because I like the Black/White aspect, but also the blending and shading. I do play with watercolor as well. I tried acrylic, but it was beyond pathetic. I once tried Oil Pastels, but that looked like a 3rd grader with crayons... I'm pretty much up for playing with any medium though. I did take a couple of watercolor classes when I lived in England, but they consisted of going into a room where the "instructor" placed a bunch of shit on a table and we were supposed to paint it. There was no advice or tips, she just walked around the room saying inane things like, "that's nice" and "good job"...waste of bloody money, that!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Thank you, Amelia, for giving me an excuse to go shopping after work:)

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Spending money is something I am very good at! :)

Since Chihully is from the Pacific NW, we champion him and you can see his work in just about every lobby around. I get bored of him, but my friend went to his exhibit in the NY Botanical Gardens a few years ago, where he weaved giant glass plants and animals in with the actual ones, and that looked pretty cool.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm feeling guilty now, because I've never bothered to go to the Chihuly Museum of Glass, even though it's only a half hour away in Tacoma.

But who wants to go to Tacoma? Aye, there's the rub.

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (ingenting) Montambo, didn't he also have some stuff in the DeYoung?

message 20: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) If it's artistic, do it! Any of it! Try it all and see what you like! EVERYONE!!!!!! I'm not kidding. Lucky for me, I have always had a passion for the theatre, but when that's not available there will always be another art form out there with amazing merits.

Dancing, drawing, painting, writing, singing--anything at all that lowers your inhibitions and gets your soul to shout!

My favorite type of dance, for example, isn't really "dance" per se, though it was developed by a dancer. The Five Rhythms developed by Gabrielle Roth, doesn't focus on technique, but rather the natural rhythms you experience daily, as a human being. You CAN'T do it wrong. It's completely freestyle. Love it.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Dance makes my soul cringe...along with being in front of a crowd, so acting is out. I'll stick with the quiet drawing and painting, reading and writing...crafting too. I'll leave the spotlight to my twin. :)

message 22: by Lori (new)

Lori HAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

message 23: by Laurel (new)

Laurel You danced on videos, Petra??? Which ones? That's awesome. Spill it.

I was asked during a dance class in high school whether I hated my body. That kind of killed my dancing career for a while.

message 24: by Laurel (new)

Laurel No Hammer pants? Dang.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments This is MC Hammer, and his pants:

message 28: by Kirk (new)

Kirk | 154 comments I used to have a pair of black pleated pants that, after I dropped a few lbs, were baggy in front. I had to retire them because I found out my students were calling me Hammer behind my back....

message 29: by Kirk (new)

Kirk | 154 comments That's where his $40 million went, Zoe. He blew it all on backup dancers.

message 30: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell He had a twenty dancers-a-day habit.

message 31: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I thought that was Wilt Chamberlain.

message 32: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) I thought Dave's post said "I had a twenty dancers-a-day habit."

message 33: by Kirk (new)

Kirk | 154 comments No, he said he'd be your tiny dancer, Amandelicious.

message 34: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) I need 19 more.

message 35: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I prefer Private Dancers

message 36: by Kirk (new)

Kirk | 154 comments I guess a few Us were allowed to touch that afterall.

Zoe, I wish I could take credit for that pic, but I swipe everything off the net (including my opinions). There are some funny other ones at http://www.collthings.co.uk/2008/08/b....

message 37: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Petra, are you sure that you don't have a picture to show us of your dancing performance? I'm highly intrigued! What else could you be doing besides Hammer dancing???

shhhh, it's never enough with the hammer.

I'm voting for this for the dancing:

Nah, on second thought, you can keep it....

message 47: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I can't think of another "hit." I guess "To Legit to Quit" was the follow-up, but it didn't do so welll. I vaguely remember something about him going bankrupt. And something about him becoming a preacher. I'm sure those two are unrelated.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

You Got to Pray Just to Make It Today!

message 49: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Oh yeah! Three hit wonder! (But I don't think "Pray" did so well either...)
