Hey, East, What to Expect is pretty much a standard in the industry so good choice there, and I always love reading the Daddy books, they're fun. I'm also going to recommend The American Academy of Pediatrics New Mother's Guide to Breastfeeding, if you're friend's considering breastfeeding. When I worked with pregnant mothers, I saw a lot of books and guides, but a lot of them tried to stay within "polite" bounds, so they missed a lot. This includes some of the nitty gritty that would probably concern a woman if she wasn't prepared for it, and it includes some diagrams on feeding, etc. Continuing in the nitty gritty vein, I haven't read it yet, but you might also try Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth. It has honest, funny anecdotes about the -sometimes unpleasant- bodily changes and experiences a pregnant woman can expect, but I should warn you, it's more entertainment than guide (especially those bits here and there that a working-class mother couldn't relate to), and the humor is not polite, LOL. So, keep in mind your mom-to-be when buying.
Thanks new_user :) I ended up getting BELLY LAUGHS as well SKINNY BITCHES BUN IN THE OVEN (in addition to the books I already listed), they both looked funny.
Glad I could help. LOL, I didn't even realize they had a SB for mothers-to-be, that's cute, but I hear a lot that they basically just push a vegan diet.
Here's another one that I really liked and will never part with: "Wonderful Ways to Love a Child" by Judy Ford
All right, this one is not pregnancy, per se, but wonderful book for parents. "Little Things Long Remembered: Making Your Children Feel Special Every Day."
I have another one to add: "Beyond Peek-a-Boo and Pat-a-Cake" by Evelyn Moats Munger and Susan Jane Bowdon, 3rd Ed.
I'm still digging through my "baby" books and remember this one with a smile. It's an organizer that coincides with the "What to Expect..." series. I enjoyed it and believe it would make a great gift for a soon-to-be mom, but need to get it in the beginning of finding out she's pregnant because this one allows you to document your doctor visits and track the pregnancy.
Saw that one at B&N, had some funny stuff in there. Like what a mom doesn't want to hear when she breaks the news..."Are you sure?"
"How do you know"
LOL.
The Birth Book by Sears and Sears was an amazing book for me. It helped me prepare for a completely natural birth and I was able to have both my children with no drugs and very little pain.
Thanks Jess. I'll have to check that out. Sears/Sears have a great collection of pregnancy and childcare books.
