Chel | 187 comments Update:

Here is my list. Many of them are unique to the Master List and add more variety to it. I have given myself a headstart (because I am super busy) and read 11 country unique books in 2011. I have read several so far in 2012. The ones listed afterwards are still to be read this year:

Read in 2011:

England: The Day of the Triffids
Czech Republic: The Good Soldier Švejk
Russia: Eugene Onegin
United States of America: Tarzan of the Apes
France: In a Glass Darkly
Scotland: The Man of Feeling
Poland: The Shadow-Line
Ireland: A Tale of a Tub
India: Untouchable
Pakistan: The Reluctant Fundamentalist
Dominican Republic: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Read in 2012:

Italy: Silk
Belgium: Cheese
Sweden: Barabbas
Dominica: Quartet
Germany: The adventurous Simplicissimus
Senegal: So Long a Letter
Kenya: Matigari

For the remainder I plan to read, the asterisk (*) means I have the book and an (o) for those on order. The others I need to have a treasure hunt to get (which I will) because many are hard to find. I need 12 more not counting two that are on order.

Australia: Voss *
Austria: The Last World: A Novel *
Bosnia & Herzegovina: Bosnian Chronicle: A Novel o
Brazil: The Devil and Miss Prym *
Bulgaria: Auto-da-Fé *
Canada: Cat's Eye *
Chile: Of Love and Shadows *
China: Leaden Wings *

Anne (reachannereach) Yes, we are glad to have you, but as Judy said, the only unofficial rule is book links so we can discover new books from each other. Welcome. This is a wonderful group of people.

How do I make books into links?

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments I added you to the master lists, had to guess on a few but we can correct as we go.

Janice (jamasc) Welcome Chel! I agree about not stressing. I may carry the challenge forward into 2013, 2014, 2015.....

message 6: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments Thanks for the tips! I'll start doing that and gradually switch them to links.

message 7: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I fixed it and converted them to links.

Chel | 187 comments Judy wrote: "Thanks for adding the links, Chel. Now we can happily browse through what you have read."

Thanks for the help with that. :)

message 9: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I just finished one from the Dominican Republic, as listed above.

Chel | 187 comments I loved this book. It is funny and tragic at the same time. It follows multiple generations of a family from the Dominican Republic to New Jersey and back. The central character, Oscar is nerdy so there are alot of fantasy, sci-fi, and comic book references too. It was the author's first novel and won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments I've given The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao as a gift, that's how much I loved it and think everyone else around me would too. I wish I could read it again for the first time!

That's a great idea.

message 13: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I added some more books.

message 14: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I finalized my list today and at least 35 of them are unique to Jenny's Master List, as of today!

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments I'm afraid you're going to have to go back and take out all the asterisks, because I have added them to the list! Seriously though, these look like great picks.

Out of Africa is on the list already, but most readers had it under Kenya (just FYI, since we're all making our lists differently it still counts wherever!).

message 16: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments Wow, thanks for adding them to the list! I had a feeling OoA was listed elsewhere by most. Thanks! I went and bought 4 of them tonight!

message 17: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments Thanks, yes that helps her too. It's a good list. Many are hard to find but I'll get them this year so it's a treasure hunt too.

message 18: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I just ordered seven books so I have 20 more to acquire to have all 52 of them.

message 19: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments Two arrived representing Israel and Mexico!

message 20: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I have 30 now and need 22. Yay!

message 21: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I did a count and all but 9 books are unique to myself per the master list so 43 of them have me as their only reader in this group. This is particularly astounding as they are deemed important in the development of literature and the novel in the view of literature professors and scholars. I am very proud of my list, I must admit.

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue Interesting list Chel. Have to admit I'm not familiar with most of them but looks like you'll be getting in quite a range of reading.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments What a list!

message 24: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments Thanks! My list was a very careful undertaking combining recommendations by literature experts with variety of 52 different countries with seeking great uniqueness from others in this group using the master list (so that 43 of 52 of them are unique to me when I last checked) and often writing brief, non-spoiler reviews in the nation folders below and often pairing them with music, food, and beverage recommendations. Phew!!
