Aaron It may sound silly, but I've recently become hooked on the style of adventure depicted in the Uncharted video game series, which is clearly a modern revision of Indiana Jones. IJ himself was an homage to the adventure serials and pulp adventures of the 1930's. I suppose this is a fairly specific genre of A/A, though I'm not sure what it would be called. I'm thinking of exotic locales, remnants of extinct civilizations, a race to find a legendary artifact(s) that ends up being a bit too real, plenty of action, interesting plot, sympathetic and intelligent heroes/anti-heroes, devil-may-care attitude with a nice dose of humor, etc. Anyone have some ideas for books that echo these kinds of things?

I've been looking into Cussler, but I haven't read any yet (it sounds like Dirk Pitt kind of falls on the less serious side of what I have in mind, but I'm open to them). I've also been trying to look for some of the original pulps like Doc Savage, though they don't seem to be too easy to find now. I've also tried a couple by Dan Brown which nearly fit in the genre, but his by-the-numbers writing style has put me off quite a bit.

Aaron, I'm right there with you. I love that sort of read.

I have found this author, Joel Jenkins, and he seems to write modern pulp.

I bought this book, but I haven't read it yet:

The Sea Witch

Henry Brown (machinetrooper) I spend a lot of time at the New Pulp Fiction blog, and they've posted some informative info on this subject you might wanna check out. Also peruse the "retro-pulp" pages @ http://www.virtualpulppress.com.

The only one I've read so far is "Radio Western Adventures." The Black Bat and some others I'd like to try are not available for the Kindle.

That sounds cool, Henry, I'll check it out. I'm a kindle user to. Sometimes I just do a sweep for free books on Kindle. A lot of them might qualify as "Pulp." I think the kindle fyre, when it comes out will have a few good Pulp options too. We'll see. I've got one of those coming too.

Henry Brown (machinetrooper) Hmm...I'd like to know about the Kindle Fire vis-a-vis pulp. I'm kinda' jealous, Hugh.

Henry Brown (machinetrooper) Oh, duh. Most of my fiction is pulpesque. You can reach it all from my Amazon author page and some of it is represented here on Goodreads, too.

I'd give a muhuhahahahhhhh... but... I'm not that good at villian laughs! (P-{D>

Fire comes in November! (I'll still probably use my Kindle Dx as my main e-book thing. The kindle opens up a lot of other media though from comic books to movies and Tv shows. etc.. )

Henry Brown (machinetrooper) Yup--I'm jealous.

Most of the new pulp is going into paperback and snubbing ebooks, it seems. I would bite the bullet and buy some anyway--just can't afford it right now.

Almost forgot to mention the aviation-themed pulp. Now that's high adventure (pun intended)!

The secret to an effective villainous laugh, Hugh, is to use all caps. ;-)

I'll remember that, but I was going for the Pure, innocent hero type....

okay, maybe not innocent, or pure, but definately hero type...

...okay, anti-hero maybe?

Okay, here's one to add to the Pulp Fiction group. Rogue Hunter: Gaia #1: Into the Abyss by Kevis Hendrickson. It's a series of short stories, that, should have been in a comic book and likely would be the makings of a Great B-Movie. It's a bit racy, if you like a hot blond in leather and lingerie (what's not to like?) It's cheesey but it's fun.

Zyra's a strong female character who kicks but, doesn't worry about breaking a nail, takes her job seriously and kicks butt.

I'd call it entertaining. It doesn't stack up to more serious, established books and characters as a mainstream read, but it's pretty good and fun pulp fiction. Despite the fights and racy outfit, it's still reasonably okay for Y.A. though it's got a more "adult" feel to it as you read.

If this isn't pulp fiction, nothing is.

And, it's action adventure in space.

Axel Matfin | 1 comments Hey gang, I found this group and I thought I should let you know that Modern Pulp is EXACTLY what I Axel Matfin do. I have a completed series entitled The Bartender that weaves it's way through many different pulp genres. I also have an ongoing series called Lazlo, which is about a globe trotting international badass (like a modern iteration of The Shadow).

Check them out if you're into that kind of thing.
