kathrine (scarlettshea) | 391 comments Hi everyone I am getting braces tomorrow and I am really scared!!! Does anyone else have braces?

message 2: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) I had braces at one time, twice actually. You will be just fine, unless they tell you different eat a good meal before you go because it will be hard to eat afterwards because your teeth hurt. I digest after you leave the Denists office take one tabletof ibprofeun (aka motrin and it's a 200mg tablet) sowhen they do start to hurt you don't have to wait for the medicine to kick in (mine always started hurting about 30min-1hr after they were put on) .
They aren't that bad painful your teeth are just a bit sore. Good luck!

Ive got braces at the moment.
yup, eat lots before you go in, because for two days or so it'll really hurt to eat. Actually, you'll hurt for the majority of the first three days. Plus, it'll feel awful once they're on, but trust me, eventually you wont be able to feel them.
And you'll drool when you first get them on. A lot. But not for long at all.
Good luck :)
When in pain, just think that its for the best, and its better to be sooner rather than later. Would you prefer to have braces now, or when you're in your mid-twenties? (Not a great look!).

kathrine (scarlettshea) | 391 comments Thanks Jess! At least Im getting dissmissed from school early! Yay!

message 7: by Mandie (new)

Mandie | 355 comments It's painful after adjustments or when you are using rubber bands too. Still, at least it's only one time for a few days- I got mine progressively and ended up getting them at three separate times and it didn't hurt any less. I'd say take painkillers because that's what a smart person would do (I can't take tablets and I didn't want to. The only time I have I almost threw up) and also buy icecream and stuff. It's a good excuse to eat junk food.

message 8: by Mayze (new)

Mayze I had them for about nine months, and they hurt for the first few days. You eventually get used to it though, just eat a lot of cold food/smoothies :)

Kate | 8205 comments Ok, this is a little late, but definitely take some sort of pain medicine. My orthodontist told me to do that right when I got home, before it started to hurt, and because of that, it never did start. It takes a day or two before you can eat everything, but for the most part, they're made out to be way worse than they are.

message 12: by Emily (new)

Emily (pixie1599) Take the pain medicine before you go, it always helps :D
I have braces, I get them off next year though.... It's been a year and a half already!!

message 13: by kathrine (new)

kathrine (scarlettshea) | 391 comments Hey everyone! I got them done already and it didn't hurt at all.....sorta! I got pink elastics.... Thanks everyone for all of your advice! Ill post a picture :)

message 14: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) Okay, glad I could help :)

I enjoyed lots of soup when I first got mine (both top and bottom with three rubber bands on each side)

message 15: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) I have mine for another month or so. They're just annoying to deal with sometimes, but not painful for long.

message 16: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) Yes, it is very much worth it in the end. I have had two different sets of braces and got my last pair off three years ago and my teeth are perfectly straight (of course I still have to wear my retainer once a week.))

It doesn't hurt at first, but it will soon! Way while you still can!
Also someone said they only had theirs on for 9 months? Lucky! I've had mine a few weeks under a year, and still have ages to go! Ill have them for my year eleven formal next year! Gross.

Irene (wingdesilverii) Georgette wrote: "haha i had to wear mine every day, all day. except for eating. i also had to get 4 teeth taken out by the dentist. it was horrible! but i look back on it now and think, im glad my mum made me do that"

Well I had to do that for the first year and a half after I had them off then I had to only wear it at night and now I van wear it once a week. (Three years without them as of January)

message 21: by Danica (new)

Danica (danicalees) | 513 comments I had my braces on for 4 years. I got them off the day before I turned 18. It actually hurt more and was more frustrating when I got them off, because the assistant wasn't taking all of the glue that held the brackets on off. I still think that I have some glue on some of my teeth. I now have to wear a retainer on my top and bottom teeth.

message 22: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) I was lucky and had my first set for two years and my second set for three years. It has now been three years since I had them off.

message 23: by Mandie (new)

Mandie | 355 comments I don't know if you have taken pain medicine or not but hot drinks help to relieve the pain too.

message 24: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (CassieVylon) | 265 comments Really? Cold drinks work for me. I just got my braces adjusted, and of course, I've another 1 1/2 years to go... xD Out of 3 total.

message 25: by Mandie (new)

Mandie | 355 comments That's strange. It seems like they should both have a numbing effect but cold drinks seem to make it more painful for me.

message 26: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (CassieVylon) | 265 comments I attempted hot soup last night, but it burnt a bit.

Emi | 80 comments i have braces but not for long...

message 32: by Elysia (new)

Elysia (elysia_rae) I have to get braces around January-February because I have some crowding and a crooked back tooth, I'm mainly bummed because I can't eat gummy worms or popcorn! How will I survive?

message 33: by Toni (new)

Toni Sparks (sparkles0322) Hey braces aren't that bad. I had mine on for three years, and they weren't that bad. Everyone says that they make you talk funny, but they actually don't. I spoke perfectly fine with them on and off. Its the retainer afterwards that is annoying a kind of slurs your S's.
