I was clearing out my emails and found this link http://www.readitswapit.co.uk/TheLibr... and thought maybe some of you could make use of it. I've not used it myself but here is a brief explanation of how it works.

Step 1 - You select the book that you would like from The Library. Many books are available from more than one person, so choose the person you like the look of. Click 'Swap with this member'.

Step 2 - The ReadItSwapIt member who owns that book receives an email saying that you want to swap.

Step 3 - The other user logs onto the site and views your list of books. If this user finds one that he or she likes, he or she will confirm the swap. He or she can also reject the swap request at this point. If the swap is confirmed, the other user will be able to see your postal address.

Step 4 - You will receive an email saying the swap has been confirmed, along with the address to which you need to post the book.

Step 5 - When the books are received, each person logs on to say they have received the book and they rate the other person.

Pretty good idea whoever thought of it!

I can see the value of this as more and more libraries close or cut their hours.

Jud: This sounds good, but there's a BUT (isn't there always one of those?). Kindle features digital rights management (DRM) on many (most?) of its books to inhibit this kind of swapping. I think any book can be shared once, but with a time limit, unless the author has opted out of DRM.

Aye that link is just for proper books not ebooks so no DRM to worry about :o)

P.s. Now I know what DRM means!

We've had two examples of that problem Jerry where we've been friendly to an american author and they think that we have upset them. Geoff mortally offended one by inviting her to join in with the other threads - and I deeply wounded one when he misunderstood a comment that I made to someone else and he thought it was aimed at him! Divided by a common language indeed! We don't have the problem very often though thankfully!

I was looking through a book on the queen's english at holyrood today needless to say "aye" was not in it.

Jud: That's perceptive of you. Generally we speak the same language formally. It's in the slang and the regional dialects that we get into trouble.

yes that's true :o)

Particularly in Aberdeen where the Doric is spoken. Even to most Scots it is like a foreign language.

you're telling me mo! I'm not even Scottish, used to work in Torry which was horrible I could hardly understand anyone. But in fairness they struggled to understand me too...

I used this all the time before I got a kindle. The only unfortunate thing is, is that sometimes you swap a brand new book for a really old one and then no one wants to swap it again.

I did sign up a few years ago but never got any further! Too much faff, and of course the postage on books is wickedly expensive. So now I just chuck em in the charity bag - not many these days since I got my lovely kindle

Yes I used this a lot when I had paperbooks I needed to exchange, some I just put up for the cost of postage and packing before I moved house. Like someone said though, its a lot of faffing about
