I love the vampire diaries. This series is my favorite vampire series. My favorite character is Damon Salvatore. He is such a bad boy and he can pull it off. The books are very different from the tv show. I do like the books better but I also love the TV show too.

I didn't read the books so I'm judging the series based on the show, but I have to agree that Damon is my favourite vampire, he is a bad boy with a heart. And the TV series always gets me screaming for the next episode.
The books and TV show are two totally different things. they basically changed everything from the books for the tv show. The only real things that are the same for both the book and the tv show are basically the names of the main characters. I like both and its like having 2 versions of the vampire diaries which is cool.

VD are the worst vampire books I've ever read.
Haven't you read Vampire Academy or Morgan Ville Vampires?
I picked one up and started reading it, but i think they are quite boring.
Jodie♥ wrote: "I picked one up and started reading it, but i think they are quite boring."Agreed, I think that they're sort of boring.
I could never really get into VD, I was as far as page 10 and I think the TV series is better though :P

Yes way because that is MY opinion.
In response to your question I have read both vampire academy and morganville vampire. I like vampire academy well enough but the morganville vampires are one of the worst vampire books I'VE ever read.
Many, many moons ago when I was actually a teen, I adored these books. That was also before there was even book 4. It was just a sad little romantic trilogy and I adored it. Then there was the 4th book. Pissed me off, I thought it was a cheap attempt at a HEA. It almost ruined the entire series for me. But somehow, not that I'm much older, and there are the continuing books now, I've come back around. I don't love the series like I used to, and I haven't seen the TV show. So, I will likely continue to read the series, just to know how it ends. But I won't be reading the spin-off books, and this will likely not be a series I will read and re-read again and again.
I've also read Morganville (I like it- it's a little campy like Army of Darkness, but not so cheesy. Just my opinion) and I've read VA- liked it very much- but somehow didn't love, love, love it.
I want to ask - has anybody read Phantom yet? If anybody has please respond to this, I have a question I want to ask. Thanks! :)
Oh and I actually really liked the VD. I haven't seen the TV show and I don't want to. My favourite book is Midnight, want to know why? Because Damon and Bonnie kiss. It's actually the main reason why I read the series, because I want to see Damon and Bonnie end up together.
I stopped reading after the book where Elena goes to some 'neverworld'. I think Damon took her and the girls. Some bird woman was after her. That was so long ago, I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly. I just couldn't get into the series after that. Did it get better???
I think you are talking about Midnight. And earlier I didn't mean Midnight I meant Shadow falls (where Damon and Bonnie kiss). To be honest I think it's all up to you, if you like the series, they get better - if you don't like the series they don't. All the way through I was just numb to any sort of feeling towards the book except when it came to Bonnie+Damon moments.
@Terri... better is a relative term. It's basically a whole new story now. Pretty much just use the original 3 books as like a rough outline background, then turn around and kiss your bottom and the original story goodbye starting with book 4. Gets weirder from there, entertaining enough that I check it out from the library and for some bizarre reason still care about what finally happens. But, I will never buy these books (beyond the original 3 I still have that even say trilogy on the front of all three... can you tell I'm still a little bitter after all these years?)
the story itself is repetitive. there's romance, and another antagonist. Salvatore brothers argue. and all that.. so I stopped. and it has too many books.

Oh I see, I am not really that interested in reading the books though, I thought it will pale in comparison to the TV shows.

No the end was awful. Damon was reli evil.

i haven't read the book..so i am gonna go by the TV series..i absolutely loved it!!! It had thrill and suspense that teeny twilight can never have...and Damon is the best, even though he is the bad guy he still has a charm that makes you smile!

I read the first book and once I'd finished it I couldn't bring myself to start the second one, despite the first one ending on a cliffhanger. The writing just really didn't appeal to me. Elena never got beyond 1D, her relationship with Stefan was based on him ignoring her (how dare he?!) and then she was just suddenly -snap- in love with him with no build up.
Have to say, I much prefer the TV series!
I have to admit that I keep trying to read VD but must say that I just dont like them. They seem so thin in dimension and blah that I have never tired to read anything the author has written. Are they all the same as VD or has the writing improved with the other books?

I agree with you.
All of these books are so different than the show...I actually think the show is way better. The books are really out there at times!

I decided to try and read it again, and i loved it!!
Better than twilight.

Joeera wrote: "I love the show but can't stand the books"I read the books when they first came out in the early 90's, and forgot how they were. When VD started, I would watch them with my niece, and WOW, luv the show, so I reread the books. Blah, the show is much better, I really struggled with the books.
The show is one of my favorites ever but I haven't read the books. I heard they are totally different and I'm really not a fan of LJ Smith at all... I am thinking the books may be better now that she isn't writing them but who knows. I'll stick with the show. Speaking of which, NEW EPISODE TONIGHT.. YAY!
