This thread is to find out what other members think of a book or series you are considering trying.

Feel free to post questions about books here. If you answer a member's question with spoilers, please use a spoiler tag.

You can make a spoiler tag by typing spoiler between < and > before the spoiler and by typing /spoiler between < and > after it. Omit the and. If it works, it should look like this:

I'm thinking of trying these series. What do you think of them? I know they aren't action but more like crime/mystery.

Lucas Davenport by John Sandford
Harry Bosch by Michael Connelly

Has anyone read any Vince Flynn?

Lee | 55 comments Lucas & Harry....are two of my favorite series!

Lee, do they have some pretty good action, or is it more just solving the crime?

Alice (nationofcrumb) | 297 comments I've read some of the Sanford ones- pretty good, but I drifted from them. Might be time to go back.

I like John Sanford. I started with Bad Blood which is a Virgil Flowers story. Davenport was older and his boss in that one. Great story and book. I've read the first Davenport story and liked it.

I struggled with Michael Connelly but I think that is because I had just read the Joe Pike stories and I was still hyped up about it.

Nancy Boone | 66 comments I love John Sandford's Prey series. Lucas Davenport is an awesome character and I never get tired of him. I just reread Certain Prey because there is a tv movie coming out Nov 6 on USA> It has Mark Harmen playing Lucas. Not sure about the fit but I will agree that Harmen can get the attitude right.

The Prey mysteries are one of my ongoing favorites. Towards the last of the serial killer Prey books, it got a bit repetitive, but Sandford ended up with Davenport getting married and going to another job and picked the series up again on a slightly different tack, though the entire series is more detective than action.

Never could really get into the Harry Bosch books and haven't read the other you mention.

Thanks for the 411, everyone!

Jenna I have read a couple Vince Flynn books. They are great! I love Mitch Rapp, very swoon worthy gentleman. ;)

Some great action and good twists. I would call it an action/spy novel more than adventure, but they are definitely worth giving a try!

I'm enjoying The Hidden Oasis It's a little bit of everything. Tends to use a "Sprint and drift" technique where action is concnerned. Some fast paced action then slow, character, plot or tension building stuff, maybe background, then another frenzy of action.

There is some vulgar language, which doesn't bother me, but I is noticable and a good deal of violence, some sugguested at children (modest amoutn, not a lot) but is handled with an appropriate degree of sensitivity that allows the bad guys to be bad and the good guys to be good. Paul Sussman seems to know when to stop one scene and when to start another, although there are sometimes when I think he's pushing the envelope. Still it's all entertaining, fun and exciting. Violence and villianry cast in an appropriate light and no doubt where the good side lays. I'm about halfway through and I enjoying it. Unless it has problems as we go along it'll be a 4 star read for me. Hard to say with half of a 600 page novel left to go. I'll keep you posted.
