Concert of the Year, Concerts You're Attending/Have Attended
Really RA. You swooned? Swooned? :DMy very first concert was Rick Springfield when I was sixteen. My cousin bought tickets for my birthday (we never hung out together and I think they were a last-resort-so-she-didn't-have-to-go-alone type of thing). I wish I could say it was memorable - it wasn't, except for her dragging me up and down the rises around the venue while she was searching for his tour bus.
My last concert was Eels back in April, in Detroit. I didn't swoon but I still had a pretty damn good time.

My most recent concert was The Black Keys and My Morning Jacket at Red Rocks.
Sheila gets eels points. Eels points are very important. She has the proper appreciation of eels. The rest of you should consider Sheila a shining example of musical good taste (except for the fact that she still thinks REM are good).

1. Aerosmith & White Lion... or was it the Zebra mini-concert in the small convention center next to the coliseum??? (*hangs head in shame*)The first cool concert was Def Leppard & Queensryche--the "Pour Some Sugar on Me" tour! We even like talked to roadies and stuff! (But just talked. Really.)
2. The last concert was Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlisle, and it was officially the best concert I've ever been to. The best show was Lyle Lovett & his Large Band last year. Amazing!
3. Next, I have no idea. I haven't thought about it lately and I haven't seen anything interesting in my Ticketmaster emails. The Neville Brothers are playing next month at one of the casinos in MS. I might go see them. (I adore Aaron Neville.)

My first ever concert was the Beach Boys when I was three or four back in the mid-80s. My first real concert was Red Hot Chili Peppers at some point in high school.The last show I went to was this past Saturday, we ended up at the Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) show downtown.
My next show is tonight. Girl Talk is playing at the Rialto and a dance party as fun as that is damned hard to resist... Though if I do end up resisting then the Mountain Goats are playing next Wednesday or Ted Leo and Titus Andronicus are playing a Halloween show next Friday.

Best Concert ever is tough, I agree.Three stand out:
1. Midnight Oil, late eighties or so, Diesel and Dust tour, Caberet Metro, Chicago...they blew the roof off of that place...a great live band at their prime.
2. The Smiths, 1986 (I think), Queen is Dead tour, Aragon, Chicago...this may be more nostaliga and revised memory than anything.
3. The Ramones, mid-eighties, Metro again...because it was The Ramones! Johnny stepped on my hand.
Notice all of these were in the distant past...so again, I think nostalgia plays a role.

So jealous of everyone who saw The Beach Boys. That must've been fun. :) Ooh, also RA's #21. First- Jimmy Buffett. Oh yeah, that lame. My parents love him, they took me when I was about 12 and my brother 8. This was my introduction to the smell of pot and drag queens.
2. Last concert- ... I don't know if this counts since it was pretty tame. An Aaron Copland tribute at the Kennedy Center. It was only okay. they ruined the "Lincoln Portrait", which was tragic. If that doesn't count, then probably the long series of bands at my home county's Irish festival in June.
3. Next concert- this Saturday, Great Big Sea! For those who do not know them, they are a Canadian celtic rock band who are so so much fun. Possibly my favorite band in the world, can't wait to see them!

Actually, I take that back. The last concert I went to was The Backstreet Boys. But it was for work. Honestly.
Trying to imagine what kind of job would necessitate a Backstreet Boys concert...(Oh Monbo, you know I loved her, too, but if she had been my first concert, I'd be making fun of myself. Hey! How was she NOT my first concert? How was she not all of our first since she "played" all those MALLS?! I guess Edgewater Mall in Biloxi, MS wasn't big enough to hold the throngs of Tiffany fans...)

I worked at a magazine for pre-teen girls, so we did a lot of kid-culture field trips. The concert was pretty funny, actually, but earplugs would have been nice.The only downside was that I think my underwear were the biggest ones on the stage.

My next concert is unknown. I was hoping to catch the Beastie Boys/Sheryl Crow/Santogold "Rock the Vote" gig here in Charlotte next week, but all tickets have been gobbled up. I'm going to see about scoring some tix for the AC/DC gig here in late December.

My first concert was Billy Idol in Seattle in 1984 (unless you want to count the Chuck Mangione concert I went to with my parents in '82). It was my best friend Gretchen's idea, really! It was a great opportunity to see leather jackets with lots and lots of zippers. And dayglo neon shirts. My latest concert was Steely Dan at the St. Michelle Winery in Woodinville. Mr. Dan is looking a little old, I'm sad to say.
My next concert will be the Transiberian Orchestra at the Key Arena (where the Seattle Sonics used to play, before being stolen by Oklahoma City, not that I care). It will be a Christmas music extravaganza! Woot!
Feist was much better than I expected. I knew she'd put on a good show. She re-tooled some of her songs and gave them a fresher sound. And she seemed to enjoy interacting with the audience.
Did she sing "Brandy Alexander?" That's my favorite.

All day music festivals. I love sitting in the sun all day long, periodically getting up for a beer or a slice of pizza, maybe even a turkey leg, and then returning to the blanket/crazy creek/Val style lawn chair to soak in the good vibes.
In 2007 Sweeter and I went to the Wakarusa festival in Kansas and saw Ben Harper, Ozomatli, Galactic, Widespread Panic, and many others. It was amazing.
Back in high school my friends and I would find someone's sibling to cart us all down to Denver to see Lalapalooza, The Big Adventure, then later the Hoarde festival and the like.
I saw Janes Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers before I learned to like their music.
This is how I discovered Sublime and the Beastie Boys, from hanging around in the mosh pit and actually grooving to the music.
Then I came home and shaved my head.

First concert I went to was The Toasters in May of '97 at the Galaxy, a club in St. Louis that no longer exists. The last concert I went to was Dr. Ring-Ding at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago during one of his rare US appearances. The best was either the Reverend Horton Heat at Mississippi Nights in '06 or the Slackers at the Creepy Crawl in '02 when they played a double set. Honorable mention goes to They Might Be Giants in '02.Next concert will likely be The Reverend Horton Heat on November 21.
RA- you're totally right about BSS-related acts. Have you ever listened to Apostle of Hustle? National Anthem of Nowhere is a damn good album. I think the BSS magic extends beyond acts that are associated with them out toward the entire Arts & Crafts label. Most Serene Republic, Los Campesinos!, The Dears- what a great roster.

I'm so envious of those who have seen Brandi Carlisle in concert! I would love to see her in a smaller venue. I know that all singers probably pine for selling out the huge football arena venues, but most times a concert is better in a closer space.
With the Indigo Girls was the 2nd time I've seen her. The first was also here in Mobile but in a much smaller venue, opening for Shawn Colvin. It was like seeing a band in your high school gym pretty much, and we sat in the front row (of plastic freaking patio chairs!). Her version of "Folsom Prison Blues" is stunning live! (Is it on any of her cds? I don't have any of them. Ooops.)
My sign that I'm a part of the digital age is that I don't have any CDs anymore (except the compilation ones I make for my car). I legally purchase all the music I like in i-tunes, and am really glad. I've found so many great artists I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. If you like the Indigo Girls, maybe you'll also like the following... Such a handy feature! I love that many book sites also make decent suggestions. However, I always vet suggestions through Goodreads! Why was I making that point? Ah, yes! You can look for anything by Brandi Carlisle online. If you don't want to get the whole CD, pick a few. Or, just listen to many of the commercials on TV. I'm sure I've heard her in at least two major campaigns lately. I wonder if the cool artists used for commercials (did someone mention their favorite on a Macdonald's ad?) feel like they're selling out a little? Hmmm
I will invoke my 5th Amendment rights (do you have those in Canada?) about where I get my none-cd music, and I don't have an mp3 player, but I still like buying (almost always used) cds and having them as objects. (I bought three "old school" hip-hop cds today, in fact. I've just never bought a Brandi Carlisle cd for some reason.) I'm sure it's related to whatever won't let me get into e-books. I like having the material possession...And with albums, I want the actual factory-printed cd with liner and all. I don't want to download the album and then burn it. I don't know why I feel that distinction, but I do. The only (apply invocation of 5th Amendment here liberally) album I've ever downloaded (was a free gift from doing my taxes on H&R Block online) was Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (Oh Neko, whatEVER the fuck that means??? ), and it STILL bothers me that I don't have the "real" album, just my burnt copy with title written in Sharpie. It just ain't the same. (Come to think of it, the other Neko Case album that I have--Blacklisted--is also not the "real" thing, just a copy of a friend's "real" album that I burned.)

Re: selling out, when you walk into the local Wal-Mart, there's a huge AC/DC display in the mens clothing section near the front of the store. That's just depressing.

PS - In heaven I'll want the Beatles to play for me along with Elvis (young Elvis...not the fat one). Maybe God could tell Frank Sinatra that I'd love for him to sing 'Fly Me to the Moon' and dedicate it to moi.
Wren, your post made me think of one of my favorite Stephen King stories: "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band" from Nightmares and Dreamscapes. It's a hoot! (The TV version sucked, btw.)
That's a pity that the TV version sucked. That was my second favorite story from Nightmares and Dreamscapes, the first being The Ten O'Clock People.
Mindy - I'm going to have to tell my husband to check that story out. Stephen King scares the shit out of me. I won't sleep for weeks if I read anything by him (I'm a wimp!)

I got to see them for the And Justice for All tour (w/Queensryche!), which makes me happy b/c after that album they kinda got soft. Bleh.
My first "cool" concert was The Psychedelic Furs and Ministry at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in 1984...the PF's "Mirror Moves" tour. Ministry was still a dance band.:)
2. My last concert was Stars of the Lid earlier this summer at the Lakeshore Theater in Chicago. Despite the fact it started late I still swooned. Swooned, I tell you.
3. My next "rock" concert is The Hold Steady/Drive-by Truckers double-bill at the Riveria (sp?) in Chicago Nov. 14th. I've seen both bands before...they're both great live...can't wait. I also have tickets to the Milwaukee Symphony Nov. 8th.
