Tamara | 3 comments To get a bit of discussion going, what are some good lefty recommendations for books then?

message 2: by sologdin (new)

sologdin the list was made with the initial recommendations of benjamin and djilas, each of whose writings are generally in the spirit of the group as i conceived it.

my conception has no claim to being dispositive, however.

for historical writings, i usually recommend:

davis' *late victorian holocausts*;
blum's *killing hope*;
hudson's *superimperialism*;
chomsky's *deterring democracy*;
de ste. croix's *class struggle in the ancient greek world*;
phillips' *weealth and democracy*;
loftus & aarons' *secret war against the jews*;
simpson's *blowback*;
aburish's *brutal friendship*; and
the usual role call of "people's history," starting with morton's text on the UK.

J | 1 comments The Communist Manifesto is pretty readable.

Lanark is a gigantic slightly surreal autobiographical story with socialist leanings.

Soul of man under Socialism is a brilliant essay by Oscar Wilde putting forward an interesting idea of socialism.

The Iron Heel is the story of a revolution (though I wasn't too keen on it)

I could write more but I'm not sure anyone's reading this topic anymore!

Anand Kumar (djedefsauron) You know that the path forward to liberty and global reform involves the end of subjectivity-conservatism, which must involve identifying the conservative main herd as patients of mental disease (neurosis).

I've made many novel findings in neuropsychology, but apparently it might be too logical for "normal people" to readily interpret (i myself am "abnormal", as an Aspergian).

If you are not in that category of "normal", that is good! You can freely download and read my whole book at

Those uncomfortable with the whole, can read the articles piecemeal, here:

Luckily, academic/lay neuroscientists and psychologists are usually more logical than other types of academics, and some of them are reading my stuff.

Dustinsells | 1 comments Hello all, I'm a noob to both the group and good reads. Still working out my own socialism so I would love any tutoring this group would provide.

I'm an film studies grad student who made his leftward shift through critical theory if that helps any.

Been reading tons of Zizek and Adorno lately and my recommendation is Zizek's In Defense of Lost Causes. I'm not too far and would happily start over if we could get a reading group on that one.

Cheers

"Hellraiser — Mother Jones: An Historical Novel"

For my Goodreads friends: If you're having a hard time thinking of meaningful Christmas gifts for people you know who care about the social, political and economic issues of our time and their connection to history, here's the deal. From Black Friday till ... we are offering two copies of "Hellraiser — Mother Jones: An Historical Novel" for the price of one (paperback or ebook) at the author's website: www.jerryash.com

At the website, the price for a paperback is $15.95 and no shipping charge if both books are sent to the same address. During the sale you get two books for $15.95. Ask for autographs at no extra charge.

Ebooks are priced at $7.95. During the sale you get two ebooks for $7.95 and they can be sent to two different email addresses at no charge.

As a novel, "Hellraiser" is a more intimate account of the iconoclastic life and times of Mary Harris Jones — known as Mother Jones to thousands — fighter for the rights of the working class and the underclass from the Civil War to the Great Depression. A study in contrasts between the goals and objectives of capitalism and democracy, the book is a journey through some of the most dramatic episodes of American history from post Civil War insurrections and riots, to the historic Chicago Fire and the rise of big business and big labor.

Most importantly, the novel brings the story of Mother Jones full circle, comparing the issues of her time to the social, political and economic troubles of the present.
