Ian is one of the best characters. One of the most touching moments is the reconciliation of Jamie and Ian in Outlander. One of my favorite lines is when Ian says he'll stay behind and 'guard Jamie's weaker side'.

Ian's death really shook me up. I know that he's not real, but for some reason the first line of Jamie's letter to Claire "Ian is dead" really got to me. It reminded me of when my own father died and my sister called me and "Dad is dead". No matter how much you expect it to happen you're never prepared. Perhaps my own experience with it manifested itself to the story. Sounds a little weird, huh?
No, I think it sounds perfectly normal. I think that these characters are so real to us that we can't help but relate to the story with our own experiences.And I agree, it was awful. To date it has been (view spoiler).
