Who says the disabled can't have sex? Not Nancy Jane Moore. And she's not squeamish about describing it, either.
That's one of the good things about Changeling: it breaks down stereotypes, takes risks.
The best thing, though, is that it takes us on a trip through the looking glass. Something I've always wanted to do. Especially when I was young like Maggie in the book. I wanted there to be a secret passageway to a beautiful land just beyond the mirror.
Moore gives us a chance to do that. To find a place beyond the beyond. She gives us a beautiful city, mysterious and inviting. It takes a good part of the story to figure out how to get there, but we get full-figured views of it before we get there. Enough information to entice us to read on.
The city isn't a fairyland for kids, though. It's not sugar candy icicles, gum drop trees, or rivers of chocolate. It's a dangerous place and its secrets are sometimes painful to uncover. This is an adult world. Still I want to go there.
Moore does a great job inventing and exploring a secret world and giving us a reason to go there.
