Hi everyone! My name's Jen--I've been an avid mystery/crime reader for a very long time. I started getting hooked on the genre when I was in my teens and read the Sherlock Holmes mysteries by Conan Doyle. Lately, I've been reading a lot of Patricia Cornwell (so I'm definitely going to be on the Post Mortem discussion board), as well as MC Beaton, Alexander McCall Smith, CJ Samsom, Charles Finch, etc. I really enjoy the #1 Ladies Detective Agency series and am hoping to see more of those written. If anyone has any other African-based stories, I'd love to get some recommendations.

Hi Jenny, Welcome to the group. I like the #1 Ladies series too. Gentle and sweet. It was a group read back in February. The book discussion threads never close, so if you want to stop by here's the link:

I just finished a book that takes place in south africa, The October Killings. I read an ARC of it, so it was still a little choppy, but the story was pretty good.

Thanks! I read the first book a few years back, I'll have to refresh myself with the story. I finished the latest book in the series a few months ago and wish there was a new one out! The author also writes other series set in Scotland, which are very different in tone, style and character. I don't enjoy them as much, but I was glad to see how versatile the author is and perhaps it reflects how special his #1 Ladies characters are. Maybe I'll look for The October Killings at the library! Good to know!
Hi Jenny. I went through my bookshelves and came up with several series set in Africa.
Wife of the Godsby Kwei Quartey set in Ghana. Read this with my in person book group and it is very good.
Mark of the Lion bySuzanne Arruda. This is a historical mystery.
A Beautiful Place to Die by Malla Nunn, The Steam Pig: A Lieutenant Kramer and Detective Sergeant Mickey Zondi Investigationby James H. McClure, and Instruments of Darkness by Robert Wilson are also good.
I've also heard good things about books by Michael Stanley, Jassy Mackenzie, and Mukoma wa Ngugi
