I read in one of your interviews that you've acted out some of the fighting scenes. Do you also do that with dialogue or some of the character movements? Have you taken any self defense classes for research?

Also, do you have some sort of training dummy or does some poor sod have to defend themselves against you? ;-)

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments Maria dont' take this the wrong way but I just had this image of you taking down two guys in an alleyway, frowning and saying 'Okay guys now attack me from the front with a knife. And remember to write down your thoughts on my attacking you before the police take you away okay?' XD

Maria V. Snyder (maria_v_snyder) | 186 comments LOL - only two guys?? Lexie, I can handle four poor sods at least ;>

I have a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate and my training included self-defense moves - so I use them for some of my scenes.

I do read dialogue aloud - it really helps to hear it so I can avoid clunky phrases. Not so much with Character movement unless it's complex or there are a lot of people in the scene.

My sparring partner tends to be invisible (not many people are home during the day), but I do ask my kickboxing teacher (who is a black belt) questions and she has a tendency to use me to demonstrate her answer!

Maria

missART | 71 comments I find myself wishing I could kick booty like Yelena can! All I know how to do it incapacitate someone and run away. Haha. "Hit and get" as Janco might say. And I guess that's better than nothing, but I hope one day to pick up aikido.

message 7: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments I've never been in a fight really but I don't mind fighting dirty if need be. Going for soft spots... It'd take a lot of kickboxing lessons to get up to Yelena's kicking butt level.

message 8: by Meme (new)

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments yes yes that sounds good to me, I don't fight a lot either I would just like to know that if I had to my short self could :)

message 9: by missART (new)

missART | 71 comments I highly recommend taking a women's self-defense class to everyone! I took one with some friends not too long ago and learned so much I didn't even know I didn't know! Very practical knowledge every girl should have.
I remember one of the instructors would dress up in thick padding and turn off the lights and make us face a wall. Then he'd sneak up and grab you and wouldn't let you go until you beat him off haha. Let's just say I was upside down at some points. Make some time to learn how to defend yourself!

message 10: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments That sounds like fun! I really need to take one of those myself. I've got pepper spray, thankfully haven't had to use it, but it would be a good idea to do that. I'll have to look around the area and see where they are offering them.

missART | 71 comments The course I took was at a shooting range (haha). But I know that might bother some people so I'm sure there are other places that offer something. :) Make sure it's not all theory tho! Cause that'll fly right out of your brain under duress. :P

message 12: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments Speaking of shooting. I told my fiance (since he's into guns) if he wants to keep a gun at our place eventually, I need him to teach me how to shoot one. I'll search around the area for self-defense. Maybe the park district will have some offered.

Hubby tried to teach me to shoot but the gun just wasn't really right for me it was a little to heave and I'm a little too blind LOL so we have to find a different one

That would be a ton of fun ahahah. Especially one of my ex-boyfriends would be nice. I'm not completely looking forward to shooting a gun, but I need to know how to use one if we're going to have one in our house.

message 16: by Meme (new)

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments That is why hubby wants me to learn we have a lot of guns in the house and when he is gone for a couple of days he wants me to be able to defend myself

message 17: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments Or at least not kill yourself while trying.. haha.

message 18: by Meme (new)

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments yes that would be a good thing to LOL

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments AWWW no don't tell me that Thu you make me feel old LOL, but I have been around guns my whole life, they still scare me a little but not so bad that I cant learn to use them.

message 21: by Thu (new)

Thu | 136 comments I bet your not old Meme, I'm just like really young. I think guns scare me because of some of the shows I watch like I would hate to be threatened by a gun

message 22: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments Guns scare me a bit too Thu, but my fiance is all about them. He's not old enough for a real one yet, but he has bebe guns that are loaded and I'm even a little too weary to handle those. I just know I need to know how to handle one if they're going to be around me.

message 23: by Thu (new)

Thu | 136 comments Yeah my parents have golf clubs...i'm not sure how effective they are but no guns

message 24: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments Hey.. we've got a baseball bat next to the bed in my apartment.. I know I can use that. I have a small one stuck beneath my drivers seat in case of emergencies... my fiance is a wee bit paranoid...

message 25: by Thu (new)

Thu | 136 comments hahaha my parents have baseball clubs behind their bed and in their cars...

message 26: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments Great minds think alike.. or at least paranoid ones do.

Thu | 136 comments i ment golf hahha but i think its really weird...like if someone has a gun would you really try to fight them with a golf club?

The sad part is I would probably forget to call 911 LOL yes I have real issues

message 32: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments I just like to not think about guns being pointed at me. I hope some guy is stupid enough to try something without a weapon so I can bop him over the head with my bat muahahah.

message 33: by Meme (new)

Now see that is a good plan

message 34: by Thu (new)

Thu | 136 comments yeah don't you wish guns were never invented? that would be great but i think its really the USA where people have to worry about guns. My french teacher told us that she didn't have to worry about guns until she moved to the USA

message 35: by Meme (new)

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments NO I like guns and it makes getting food to eat a lot easier, although you can use a bow and I am just now learning how to use that, its going to be interesting LOL, its not the guns fault that people are crazy LOL

message 36: by Thu (new)

Thu | 136 comments hahaha i guess but its still scary to walk around in like a dark ally well i've never done that before but imagining it is scary.

message 38: by Thu (new)

Thu | 136 comments yeah its really dangerous now and its sad that people can kill eachother

message 39: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments It is scary. Or when you think someone is following you in their car on your way home.. that scared me last night when these people turned around behind me after I did cause I missed my turn. But it was a false alarm.

message 40: by Meme (new)

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments I have had that happen before, you hurry up to get in front of them or try to lose them then find a place turn of your lights and watch to see if they slow down when they pass you it really is scary

message 41: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments IT is! They ended up parking next to me at my apartment, but headed to a different building, hollering drunkenly. Maybe they thought I was as drunk as them and were trying to find some one to party with who knows.

message 42: by Meme (new)

Meme (mstylp) | 519 comments maybe they realized you car was seen where they live and was trying to find out how to get home LOL

message 43: by Kristen (new)
