I've just purchased our own WilliWit's Twenty Tiny Tales - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Twenty-Tiny-T...Haven't read it yet, but is highly recommended, especially by our own Andre Jute.
I really enjoy short stories, too. Just some I'd recommend...Feedback by Nick Spalding
I, Zombie by Nick Spalding
The Other Room by James Everington
Four Short Stories by Shelagh Watkins
The Bellhound by Camille LaGuire
The Apple by Michel Faber
The Thief by Ruth Rendell
Also if you search on Amazon for 'The Mammoth Collection...' you'll find short story collections in various genres.
Oftentimes you'll find an occasional gem of a short story for free from Amazon or Smashwords but it'll be hidden in the midst of some dross, I'm afraid.

Ooo. Thanks for that link, Jacquelynn!
I second Geoff's recommendation for twenty tiny tales!
I've also read and enjoyed these shorts by Daphne Du Maurier - The Breaking Point. They are very well written but disturbing; she wrote them when she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

I can endorse The Other Room by James Everington. They are really unusual stories and stay with you long after you've switched off your kindle.
Patti (Totally Bananas) wrote: "James' The Shelter is excellent as well but not a short story."It's a novella, so short compared to a full length novel.
Shaun wrote: "Never one to miss an opportunity;) Voyeurs of Death by Shaun Jeffrey"Ohmigawd! How did I forget to mention Voyeurs of Death?
I'm sorry, Shaun. I still have a couple stories left, so can't review it yet.
I'm loving what I've read so far.
Also, check out this thread - the author is offereing her collection of short stories for free, for just a short time.

No problem. Just thought I'd jump in :) I think the free sample you can get on the Kindle allows you to read the first three or four stories for free anyway, so that should give any prospective reader a pretty good idea what to expect.

I wouldn't want to take Willie's recommendation for a dentist -- you'll understand my sudden squeamishness when you read his stories -- but he's very good reading even on a phone. I had his stories on a new cheap smartphone I bought for an emergency phone on my bike, and had to ration myself to one at a time at the breakpoint of my ride so that I wouldn't catch my death of pneumonia sitting there all sweaty and growing stiff, gobbling Willie's tiny tales.
Willie's stories are awesome for those short bus rides or even waiting at the bus stop. Or if you are between books and can't decide what to read next. The best thing for me is you get double the value, because as soon as I had finished one and learned of the little twist, I had to go back a read it over again.
I've been reading ones by Cambria Hebert, a new author in one of my other group. Neither are my thing so I expected them to be a duty-read, so to speak, but actually I really enjoyed both Before and Whiteout (the second in particular. She also has a stonking one about the Gingerbread Man in a Christmas Anthology we're doing but I did one for that so it seems a bit spammy to put the link in. Do check out Whiteout, though - I'd love to hear what people think who don't know her and so aren't influenced by how lovely she is. Don't *think* I am, but still....And as Gingerlily hasn't linked to hers, I for one am looking forward to reading Re Awakenings, an anthology of new Speculative Fiction (but obviously, having not read it yet, can't comment on its virtues or otherwise!!)
And of course, in case you prefer trad-pub and haven't already, I love the Sherlock Holmes ones - The Adventures of Sherlock Holmesesp the bits where Watson writes things like "We know who is behind these threats and if they don't stop we shall have no alternative but to reveal to the public the story of the politician, the trained cormorant and the lighthouse!" and then no more is ever mentioned about it! The little tease....

As one of the other authors contributing to this anthology, I'd like to add my two penn'orth.

Hi all, My name is Mary and I stumbled upon the short stories by Elle LaPraim and fell in love with short stories. I had not read any before someone recommended hers. Now I can't get enough, so until she comes out with more, can anyone else recommend a good short story author?
Thank You
Mary
Hi Mary!
I just noticed your post in Agony Aunt and thought I'd bump this thread for you.
Hope you find something you like!
I'd like to recommend Watch You Drown. You'll know, I think, that Chris and I edited one of the best crime-fiction anthologies of the last year (and there have been lots of those) when we released Pulp Ink. It means I'm not neutral in what I say. Nor does it mean I'm trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
Chris Rhatigan has been making a big splash in the world of fiction. He specialises in short fiction and is a real craftsman of the art.
Not only does he put out great work, he's a reviewer and an editor and this puts him at the cutting edge.
What I admire in this collection is two-fold. First of all, it's lean and stripped of the unnecessary yet remains juicy and plump at the same time. The stories a rich and the worlds have all the dimensions I could want as a reader.
The second reason is connected with his diversity - the themes, voices, territories and genres are really varied as is the length; he can thrill with a piece of micro-fiction, flash and short without faltering or losing his edge in any of these formats.
It's a really poweful mix you'll find here and I hope that your prepared to jump into its icy waters (for dark and chilled they mainly are) - I guarantee that you'll be woken up with a start and that you'll be diving straight back for more.
Only negative for me is the cover - and that's not the way I judge a book, no way.
Superb and super-cheap.
You'll find it at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Watch-You-Dro...
Thanks.
If you pop over to Sea Minor http://nigelpbird.blogspot.com and go to the second article, you'll find the recommended short reads by British talent Martin Edwards. He picks lots of stories in a variety of interesting categories.

I have really gotten into reading short stories ever since I found the author Elle Lapraim. I just love reading a story in one sitting, or when I am on the tube. I feel so accomplished. So does anyone have any other short story others they recommend?
