Schmerguls | 7 comments In line with noting death of authors I've read, I did see that Brian Williams told of this death. I have read these books by him:
3799 Dance Hall of the Dead, by Tony Hillerman (read 10 Sep 2003)
3800 A Thief of Time A Novel by Tony Hillerman (read 12 Sep 2003)

My comments on them:

3799. Dance Hall of the Dead, by Tony Hillerman (10 Sep) This book won the 1973 Edgar award and is a mystery involving a good Navaho cop and his sidekick. There is a lot of talk about Zuni religion and ceremonies which I found boring, and the setting in the New Mexico Indian country was all strange to me. But the central character is an admirable guy.

3800. A Thief of Time A Novel, by Tony Hillerman (Sep 12) This is on a list of "100 Best Mysteries of the Century" compiled the Independent Booksellers of America--of which 100 books I have now read 17. Lt. Joe Leaphorn of the Navaho police is again the central figure. This is a fast-moving book with an exciting and satisfying ending. It is good to read a novel free of foul language and concerning heroes who are decent moral folk, and the Navahos in the book are smart good people.

Vicky | 62 comments I was sorry to hear of his death. I think I've read all of his works. My father also liked him and it was something we shared.

Vicky | 62 comments Actually he's a parrotlet, smaller than a parokeet. He's sitting on my husband's glasses. Unfortunatly, he is died a few years ago. We have a conure now.

Kathy | 5 comments I love Tony Hillerman books. I learned so much about the southwest and Indian culture.

stormhawk I started reading the Tony Hillerman books years ago, for a while was having to wait for the next one to be published to keep going with the series. Not sure why, but I wandered away from reading his books ... then my SO started to find copies in library book sales and free to a good reader piles at train stations, and started collecting them all over again for me!

It had been long enough since I'd read them that even the older novels were nearly new to me ... I might remember some of the main plot points, but the journey to get there was just as much fun.
