Ashley This book illustrates the obscure line of blame in the deaths of Anton's, the main character, family at the close of WWII. The ending leaves the reader perplexed at the cause of Anton's suffering. One of the main ideas is presented in the book is "Alligators are just like pickles". In war sometimes the innocent behave like the guilty and vice verca. Who can tell the difference when it is the innocent that die at the hands of the innocent and the guilty?

Lukasz Pruski I am not sure if I read your comment correctly. To me, some of Mulisch's main points are that there exist moral dilemmas that do not have a solution, and that most things in life are basically random.
