The Shiralee is wonderful ... there was great movie made back in the 50's with some of Australia's most iconic actors (Peter Finch, Bud Tingwell) and oddly enough Sid James from the Carrie On movies, and then another in the 80's with Bryan Brown. If you haven't seen them they're worth tracking down. ... and some trivia, the author was married to Ruth Park who wrote Australian classics like Playing Beatie Bow and The Harp in the South. ... note that I'm doing the typical Australian thing and claiming her even though she's actually a Kiwi :-)
There are several here that I wanted to add to my list. My plan is to spend a week in each country: to read the book I had planned, and if I finish it early to read another from the same country. I don't know how realistic that is: but hopefully I will fit in several more books during the challenge. All Quiet on The Western Front is one I intend to read in 2012; and I never found a good one for North Korea, but I see you have, so that has gone on my Amazon wishlist!
Indeed we do share common reading interests. You have titles listed that I have on my list and other books that I have read and loved - for example Portrait of a Turkish Family. I really enjoyed that book. I want to read When the Elephants Dance and.....I have recommended The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East to so many that my jaw is sore. :0)
The Cellist of Sarajevo and The Seamstress by Peebles are must read books! So is The Seamstress by Bernstein. I just mentioned it because it has the same title as the one you have for Brazil. This one is a holocaust story set in Romania.
Enjoy!
It's really coming together, Sonya, and I see that you've made a few changes in the lineup! It's hard not to stop tweaking. I remember Geisha as having very lush and descriptive language -- very cinematic in feel. No more [Book: The Summer Book]? :)
Tanya..thanks for the info. I will have to check the movie out. I found the book at a used bookstore and it looked really good. Glad to know I won't be disappointed! Chrissie~I've noticed we have a lot of books in common :) Thanks for the reassurance that I have some good reads! Angie...that sounds like a great idea but I'm worried about even getting one a week. If you want to read All Quiet together just let me know.
Mikki...not to worry I have several books still to add! I'm still taking a break on the island with you next year :) This is just the "beginning" list. Check out the updated one later. I think we may doing a lot of traveling together next year...so pack light!
I've updated my list...some countries I couldn't decide so I'll choose which book to read when I arrive at my destination. Okay GR guru I need 3 more countries (even though my list looks so long). Ready to have my list finalized!
Hi Sonya - I added your list to the master lists. I remember reading The Endless Steppe in high school, and hadn't thought of it in ages!
Judy wrote: "Chelsea, you and many others have lots of Grand-book-children (and probably great grand-book-children)!"Who is going to start the first book family tree?
