Elise (eliseeubank) | 24 comments I have recently gotten hooked on The Walking Dead which airs on AMC on Sunday nights. One of my friends got me hooked on the show, and shortly after I learned that there was a book series. I haven't actually read one of the books yet, but the TV series is awesome. My experience has been that if the movie/TV series is awesome, that means that book are even better.

Has anyone read the series yet? Robert Kirkman has two different lines of the same saga. He has the graphic novels and regular novels (plus the TV show). The reviews I have read so far on Amazon and even on Goodreads are good (for the most part). I was just wondering if anyone had read any of his novels. They are only available in hardback so far and are like 20 bucks a piece on Amazon, so I wanted to try to get some feedback before I took the plunge.

Martha (marthas48) I've never watched the show, but have the 1st season on DVD that a coworker loaned me. Guess I'll watch it this weekend. Everybody raves about it.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1450 comments I watched the first season and liked it because it was something novel, but this season I'm finding the dialogue overdone. Characters go on and on discussing things that are obvious.

That's exactly what I thought while watching the latest episode. I even FF'd through some of the dialogues.

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) I have enjoyed the comic book series for the last 5 years and its in my humble opionon the best survival, zombie story i have seen in any medium. Books, comics or tv/film. Its written like the best tv shows.

I enjoy the tv series too now in the second season. First season was a tame, watered down version and uninteresting characters. The new writers for new season had made me care for the characters now. Its a bit different from the original series but fun watch.

There is no novels written by Kirkman. He is a comics writer and the real Walking Dead is the comic series collectd in Graphic Novel collections. The novel is written by someone else and its license product to just to make money on the comics fame.

Read The GN collections if you want to read the real TWD series.

If you liked the tv show you will like the the comic series. Reading in graphic novel collections makes it almost a book series. Its better read to read many issues at once. Its has bleak, dark art and not cartooney art comics.

Not like a dead man, she said he was really down to earth. Thought he was great as Egg in This life.

I bought volumes 1 and 2 today. I have already finished volume one and was a bit disappointed by it. The plots don't match up completely, and so far, I think I like the TV version better. The story line is great, but I am lover of words. There is something to be said for excellent writing that doesn't require pictures.

I am going to continue to read the volumes that I have already bought. Perhaps it is just different and will take me time to adjust too. Switching from Tana French and Jo Nesbo to Kirman's graphic novels is a huge jump. The artwork is excellent, but I miss the wordy details.

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) The plots dont match ? Why does that matter ? Kirkman the creator of the comic series and one of the showrunners of the tv show wanted it to be different than the comic alittle. To surprise long time readers.

Tv series has copied most of what has happened in tv show from the comic series. Herschel's farm etc

You just have to read more than 1 volume to see what the original series is about. Its a slow start to build the characters. Vol 3-5 it gets going.

Good to know. I have read 1 and 2. They didn't have 3 at the bookstore, so I'll have to get it later.

Ken Consaul | 209 comments Really like this series though Season2 was starting to drag a bit, throwing in a gory zombie eradication as the hook. Last night's mid-season finale was really good. Left the viewer wanting more.

Now, just for a laugh, check out The Walken Dead

Curlyhair | 187 comments I love watching this, we've been hooked from the beginning. Quite a refreshing change from the norm on the tv, especially with the good script and great acting.

message 21: by Bill (new)

Bill I've enjoyed Season 1 and 2 tremendously and can't wait for them to start up in Feb again.

message 22: by Ken (new)

Ken Consaul | 209 comments anyone read the com....graphic novel? I participate in a woodworkers forum and we were discussing WD (yeah, go figure). One member is comparing the graphic to the TV show. Vastly different. sample comment:

"After the outbreak had started, Dale lost his wife, Erma Horvath, to zombies early, something that incredibly devastated him. He becomes very close to Andrea and Amy while in the camp, eventually forming a long lasting relationship with Andrea. When Rick Grimes arrives at the camp, Dale reveals to Rick that he is suspicious that Shane and Lori are having an affair. Rick initially ignores this advice. Later Dale saves Donna from being bitten by a roamer, beheading the zombie, which reveals that even beheading a zombie does not fully kill them.

Later one night during dinner, Rick asks the group about their lives before. Dale reveals that he was a car salesman who retired, and set out with his wife across America two years prior to the Zombie outbreak. During the zombie outbreak his wife was killed. It was during his trip to Atlanta that he picked up the sisters, Andrea and Amy.

After Shane’s death, Dale tells Rick he knew all along something was up, and that he was one of the few survivors that prior to Rick coming to the camp, wanted to relocate only to have Shane refuse, and Dale only following due to Shane being the law.

After burying Shane, the survivors set off in Dale’s RV away from Atlanta in an attempt to find somewhere safe. Lori reveals to the camp that she is pregnant, which alarms Dale, who suspects the child maybe Shane’s, only to be quietened by Rick who suspects the same, but doesn’t want to think about it now.

But as you can see they have changed up things....

For instance the little girl that was missing (and later found undead and zombiefied) is not dead, she is a survivor still in the GN...."

Dale a father figure? Shane dead? Sophia safe?
Quite a contrast.

Elise (eliseeubank) | 24 comments Yeah. I have only read comic issues 1 and 2 so far, but so far I actually like the plot of the TV series better. I'm wondering since Shane is starting to go off the deep end if Rick's son will end up killing him after all (like he did in the comic series). They have started teaching him how to shoot and to carry a gun ... Makes me wonder. I'm almost prepared for that the be the season finale after the Feb mid-season premier. Any thoughts?

WHHhhaaaaat?

message 25: by Elise (new)

Elise (eliseeubank) | 24 comments Yeah, if you read the graphic novels, it's Rick's son that kills Shane. Shane goes insane and pulls a gun on Rick. The kid shoots him to save his Dad. In the novels, Shane never makes it past the first camp. He is killed before they leave the outskirts of Atlanta. Fans of the show likely remember when Shane was looking at Rick through the scope on his gun like he was going to shoot him ... Dale interrupted. In the novels, it was the boy that stopped him, and the boy shot him.

I say this, but hey, so far the novels and the TV series are not exactly lining up. They end up going to to some of the same places, but the details are not the same. Either way it will keep you guessing. All I know, is that Shane is out of control and is a loose cannon. It's not going to surprise me if somebody shoots him. For shock value, I think it will be boy. The TV audience won't see it coming. They will expect Rick or one of the other men to take him out ... not the boy.

Just my prediction though. Guess we will find out in February!

message 26: by Mohammed (new)

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) I have read all the issues for comics and really Sophia is the most pointless character of TwD comic. She survived only as generic kid friend of Carl. Her death in tv version actually was good, sad.

Shane will die i think in tv because they are making him much worse than he ever was in the comic. He is the bad guy and he has to die or kill Rick and create sick leader of WD tv series hehe.

What you mention are the smallest part of the GN series. The backround info. Plus its good its different. Than tv fans can go and read the comic series and see different series.

Big storylines i think will be the same with minor changes. Herchels farm is the same and it was the firs big storyline they got somewhere different. Next places hm....

message 28: by Andy (new)

Andy (amarinko) | 4 comments In the "Walking Dead" TV show Shane is going to become The Governor!!! Those who have read the comics will know who The Governor is.

Somebody else floated this idea on another message board awhile back and I wasn't convinced, but after the Season Two (first half) cliffhanger last Sunday I think we may be heading that way. I could totally see the group casting out Shane because of his out-of-control behavior and then running into him well down the road as The Governor. Obviously I don't know if this is what will happen but it's certainly intriguing and isn't implausible at this point. It would be kind of anti-climactic if Rick or one of the other characters just ends up shooting Shane in an upcoming episode.

Ken Consaul | 209 comments Amazon offers some bound volumes of the comics. I was thinking of ordering some for Christmas presents.
Anyone have these and can advise whether they are quality hard bounds or just some cheap binding and cover? If I give them as gifts they ought to look like something nice.

The hardcover versions are expensive because they are in much better condition. Usually there is nothing wrong with them. They are better gifts than paperback versions.
