Amazon Kindle & Fire discussion

This should make for some very interesting reading. BN claims that the Nook Tablet is superior to the Fire because it can play HD video. Guess what? It can't.

That is very deceiving. I don't like that at all. I am happy I ordered a Fire. If I want to buy instant video to play on it (not Prime) I should go with the non-HD version of the show? I may buy some at a later date. Also I can add an episode or 2 to the device storage with these ones if I am traveling (unlike Prime that have to be streamed.) Is this all correct? I am trying to learn as much as I can before mine arrives and because I am trying to get my mom to get one too!

Hi Jen, for instant video, I don't think there's a price different between HD and non, so you can get whatever and the Fire will play it at the best quality it can.

The storage space on the device would allow for a handful of full-length movies, so you'd easily be able to take plenty with you.

That's exciting you're getting one for your mom! Don't tell him, but I'm getting my dad a Kindle Fire!

There is a difference in price on iTunes between HD and non-HD, I haven't yet check on Amazon Prime though.

My understanding is that the storage will hold up to 10 hours of video (but less if you have apps, music and books on it).

There is a price difference on Amazon at least of some products (Current season of House is 1.99 per episode in standard definition and 2.99 per episode in HD). I typically buy everything in standard definition, I own an HDTV but it isn't big enough for it to make a difference to me.

I don't really think that on a 7" screen HD would be all that noticeable. Videos look pretty great on my Fire without HD.

No I am not getting one for her but I wish I could! My parents bought me mine. I hope when she sees how much I love mine that she will want one. I am thinking I will love it! If the standard definition is sometimes cheaper I may just buy those. I have been thinking of getting a Roku box. It depends on if I have enough gift card money this year... We have a 1080p HDTV in the living room so I think I could play Amazon videos on the Roku if I got one.

I think they're comparable gadgets..and I was able to "sideload" the nook reader for Aneroid to my Fire using Getjar. It works fine although its UI is slightly different and takes some getting used to.

It's nice to have options -- there is an inexplicible price difference between bn and amazon on some content and in my case I was able to finally use a bn gift card I'd been carrying around.

my kindle is the machine for me. haven't gone into a bookstore in years.
