On NPR the other day, I heard this story:

Barron Lerner explores drunk driving and its legal evolution in his new book One for the Road: Drunk Driving since 1900. He begins by discussing Margaret Mitchell's death, claiming prior to that drunk driving was not taken seriously; in fact, most people blamed the victim for being in the wrong place at the wrong time! However, he argues that when Margaret Mitchell's death brought national attention to the issue and instigated legal action about drunk driving.

It's a pretty interesting interview. I think the book just came out for any of you interested in checking it out.

The above link has the excerpt of the book that discusses Margaret Mitchell's death. Although I appreciate the author discussing MM, he has her age wrong. He writes that she was 43 when she was killed, but she was in fact 49, as I'm sure all of you here know. Despite this error, the chapter is engrossing. If only there were a comment section below the excerpt....
