Hope to participate in this discussion, but I have to finish my current read (and it's being a bit slow). The only Maurice Gee I've ever read is the Plumb trilogy, at the suggestion of a lass I was at TeaColl with... and I'd rather not think how long ago that was.
An easy read with an action-packed storyline. I'm almost halfway through my first Maurice Gee book. I like how it is set in Auckland. The map at the front is especially helpful for South Islanders like myself. I think this is a book my class would enjoy. Lots of boy power, though a little more girl power would have been good. Maybe girls were more precious back in 1979.
I feel like it's showing its age a bit. I'm getting a bit of a nostalgia vibe off it, and not just because the harbour bridge toll was abolished years ago. I'm enjoying it, but not gripped. I keep putting it down to wander off and do stuff (like check the email, not actual useful stuff). Still, I do love the familiar setting, and the map did give me a bit of a buzz. I'm feeling relieved my local volcano isn't important enough to feature though!
Finished this morning. I see what you meant about girls being a bit precious. Found the end a bit ambiguous, too. Still, I'm glad to have finally read this Kiwi classic.
