I always liked the quote from C.S. Lewis who explained reading this way: "We read to know we are not alone."

For me it explained everything that was resonant about a really good book.

He also said: “Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”

I've certainly found that to be true as I get older. As I am reading fairy tales and other great stories for children to my own children I understand those stories on a much different level and connect to them in ways very different from my youth.
