Roberta Has anyone read this book? Did you like it? Did it help you? Did it help you getting a different perspective on things? I grew up in a "modern" family and I was never discriminated, neither at home nor in school, until I started working and especially until I read this book and I found out that maybe I have been disciminated in more than a way and for all of my life... I would not consider myself a feminist but maybe deep down, I am. I am trying to educate myself on the subject can anyone suggest good books I can start with? Thanks.

Grete (doublenerds) | 1 comments Hi Roberta,

I have not read the book but as a professional woman I have an abundance of personal experience with some of the topics mentioned in the blurb. It can be a challenge to find a way to navigate your relationships in the working world so that you remain true to yourself but also gain the respect and attention you deserve, but it sounds like you are doing exactly the right thing by educating yourself!

If you are interested in learning about feminism in general, a good book to consider is "Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman's Guide to Why Feminism Matters", by Jessica Valenti. This book is a quick read and does not bury you in detail, which makes it decent "Feminism 101" reading.

I am in my 40s and the book that resonated with me the most when I was in my 20s is "Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women". This book was updated in 2006 but quite frankly, even the old 1991 version describes today's world pretty accurately.

Another book to consider is "The Essential Feminist Reader" by Estelle Freedman. This book provides a sampling of the writings of some of the most important names in western feminism. It's a great way of learning where we have come from and will give you some ideas about who you would like to learn about in more detail.

Good luck with your journey, and I hope you find the answers you are looking for!

Cheers,
Grete
