Which book have you read this semester (since school began in August until now) that you would recommend to your classmates?
Give the book title, author and the reason why you recommend it, include the genre, types of characters and literary elements involved in the book that would compel someone to read it.

message 2: by Calvin (last edited Nov 30, 2011 04:23PM) (new)

Calvin I have read "Night" by Elie Wiesel. This is an excellent book that greatly illustrates the grotesque reality of the events that occurred in Nazi concentration camps as told from the perspective of the author as a young boy. (Yes this is an autobiography.) I've read it twice in 8th grade and once again this year because the emotional content produced by the actions of the main characters os extremely compelling. This book greatly shows the persistent and unbreakable spirit of the human soul and the longing for life that is possessed by all people.

message 3: by Danny (new)

Danny Elizalde I read Flight by Alexie Sherman. This book was good because the characters in this story were different from other stories. The main character didn’t ever care about his life. He went to jail often, and switched from foster family, to foster family. This book gave a lot of suspense, because of how the author wrote the story. This book was also interesting because the character goes back in time to stay alive and fight a mission.

message 4: by Nick (new)

Nick I am reading " The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan. This book is good so far because it is packed with action and suspense. I never found myself bored or lost in the story. So far it has a great storyline. The main character in the story so far is currently learning about this new camp he just got into, camp halfblood. It is a camp for kids that are half god and half human. I am eager to finish this book but also hesitant because of the great storyline that this book has.

message 5: by Ryann (new)

Ryann Miguel I recently read “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger. It’s a dramatic detailed account of a situation unmatched by any other throughout literature nor cinema. Henry and Clare are equally powerful and complex and the read was definitely worth it in the end. And yes, it’s a lot like the movie (with Rachel McAdams and that one guy from Troy).

message 6: by Harrison (new)

Harrison I read The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan. While I thought this was one of Riordan’s best works, I would still only recommend it to those who have read The Lost Hero. The Son of Neptune is a fantasy novel, and as most of Rick Riordan’s fantasy novels are, it is brimming with adventure, humor, and suspense. The characters in this novel are comprised of both new and familiar faces, which I thought was a clever idea on Riordan’s part. Indeed, there is never a dull moment in this or any of Riordan’s other novels.

message 7: by Paula (new)

Paula Garcia (paula_mgarcia) I have read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. The Alchemist details the journey of an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago. Santiago, believing a recurring dream to be prophetic, decides to travel to the pyramids of Egypt to find treasure. The Alchemist is an allegorical novel and also classified in the psychological genre. What I like best about "The Alchemist" is that it is an easy reading parable about the pursuit of our dreams and the challenges we are faced with along the journey. The author gives insight and inspiration to us , the reader, to take up the journey and dare to chase after our dreams again which I find really unique yet again inspiring. Definitely worth the read.

message 8: by Julia (new)

Julia Rivera I read "Incantation" by Alice Hoffman, it is a historic fiction novel set during the Spanish Inquisition. The story goes through the troubles of a family that are pretending to be Christians to hide their Jewish roots. The family has to hide their Jewish roots because Jews were being persecuted throughout Spain in this time period. The young girl struggles to escape as her family gets persecuted by the officials of the town. This book shows many literary elements such as suspense making it compelling to read.

message 9: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Cruz I read "The Big Game of Everything" by Chris Lynch. It's a humorous sports fiction novel set at a present-day golf course. Jock and his brother Egon are head butting brothers that can't seem to agree on anything, and are key elements in the constant amusement displayed in the story. Key literary elements include a fitting time and setting, a central theme of humor, and a conflicts; a major one being between the two brothers. Altogether, his book is just compelling to read.

message 10: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Cassidy I recently read "Garden Spells" by Sarah Addison Allen, this story is about love, family and some drama. In this writing, the Waverly family is known all around town as having special gifts and talents that made them outsiders even in thier home town. Living in the old Waverley home, Claire Waverley chases folks away from her backyard apple tree, and its unusual fruit, while she runs a successful catering company using ingredients from the magical family garden. But, when her prodigal sister Sydney returns after ten years, Claires quiet world is turned upside down. i reccomend this book because it portrays many various moods or tones and it is has an interestig genre of, magical realism. i was very inspired by this book and I could not stop reading! This story cotained some literary elements to keep it interesting like suspense. I have read this book three and i loved it more each time and was able to get something different out of this story each time, so i definately reccomend this book to teens my age.

message 11: by Nate (new)

Nate A book I have read is “Breathing Lessons” by Anne Taylor. This book is categorized in the fiction genre, and contains many kinds of characters. It has characters that argue frequently, yet are able to make amends. It also has people who can sing. I recommend this book because it teaches people that there may be times that will trouble you all your life, you can still learn to enjoy it and have fun with it. A literary element in this book that would compel someone to read it is the anticipation it will give the reader while reading along in the story.

message 12: by Dominic (new)

Dominic I read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" by Mark Haddon. This is a very odd book. It is fiction, and is written as a journal of a 15-year old boy with autism. The way he thinks and how he observes ordinary events is very different than how most people do. I enjoyed seeing the unique way he reacted to certain situations. However, I was slightly alarmed by how similar to me he seemed at times. I thought this was a great book, but there is a good chance that this book isn't for you. It is a different kind of book, and you may not find his character as awesome as I do. Even so, I would suggest giving it a try. You might end up enjoying it.

message 13: by Musa707 (last edited Nov 29, 2011 08:02PM) (new)

Musa707 I am reading "No God But God "by Reza Aslan. This book is mainly historical fiction and the beginning of the book is a biography. In result I recommended "No God But God" to readers who enjoy reading about History and major historical figures. This book can sometimes spend to much time on one point and may seen uninteresting. However if you keep reading I will be sure you will enjoy it.

message 14: by Julissa (last edited Nov 29, 2011 08:33PM) (new)

Julissa I read "13 little blue envelopes" by Maureen Johnson. This book is about mystery, love, and adventure. If you like adventures this is the book for you. If you were given the money to travel the world would you do it?(of course). But could you do it without a cell phone or a map or even the internet? Well thats what Ginny did and it changed her life. This book is three storys wraped into a little blue book. What i like most about this book is how it is written in third person, and the author uses details that make me feel like im in the story.

message 15: by Lyssa (new)

Lyssa J. A book that I read that I recommend is “Twisted” by Sara Shepard. This book is full of excitement and mystery, with a side of romance. “Twisted” is a good book that was written pretty well. It always keeps the reading guessing of what will happen next. This book is recommended for anyone who likes thrillers, mysteries, drama, and a little bit of romance. There are four main characters in this book. One of the main characters is super smart, another is insecure about her looks, another has a complicated family, and the last is just complicated, but they all have something in common. They all have secrets.

message 16: by Adriana (new)

Adriana A book that I have recently read and will recommend is “Witch and Wizard” by James Patterson. I recommend “Witch and Wizard” because it is an exciting book about two children Whisty and Whit, whom were recently found out to be a witch and a wizard. For most of the book the brother and sister didn’t know they had powers, and went through the New Order to try to stop themselves from being hung. “Witch and Wizard” is an adventure, mystery, and action book, Whit and Whisty both have amazing powers because Whit is a wizard and Whisty is a witch. The book is all about Whit and Whisty trying to control their powers and getting away in the New Order.

message 17: by Mark (new)

Mark I am reading "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. This story is fiction and it takes place in the future, in a dystopia setting. I recommend this book because it is a creative story. The actual concept of this story is fascinating enough to make you want to keep reading. It deals with 12 poor districts where two people are randomly selected from each to fight to death to either reward the district that they are from with plentiful food or lose and make the district suffer by starvation. It is a book that keeps you on edge as you follow the main character throughout her journey of entering this game and wondering if she will make it out alive.

message 18: by Marlon (new)

Marlon Cereca I just recently finished "Son of Neptune" by Rick Riordan. This fiction book takes place here in the present, but the Roman and Greek gods are real. They each have many demigods with special powers living among us. I thought this was not only the perfect sequel to Riordan's new series, but a perfect way to keep Percy Jackson's legacy. The way Riordan presents battle scenes and problem solving and coordinates the real world with the world of the Gods is much enough to keep you reading. Also with Riordan's dreadful suspense, familiar humor, and surprising turns in every chapter, you will be hooked for sure. Riordan's latest entry will keep you on the edge of anticipation even after you finish reading.

message 19: by Dj (new)

Dj Harris I have read the book "Finding Lubchenko" I really recommend this book because it was a real good book. I was excited and the story that it was telling really just kept me motivated to keep reading it. It's a mystery book that has to do with a teenager and his friends trying to find a assassinator because his father is being blackmailed for the crime and is spending time in prison. So if you like to ready mysterious books you should definitely read this book.

message 20: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Chan The book that I recommend is “Divergent” by Veronica Roth. This book takes place is a dystopian Chicago. Due to overpopulation, Chicago is divided into 5 factions, each faction representing a different virtue. The main character is at the age where she has to choose what faction she wants to go to spend the rest of her life. After choosing to be Dauntless, she must now endure training and tests to be initiated in the faction. Not only does she have to worry about training, but she also has to make sure that a secret that could place her in mortal danger, stays a secret. This book will keep you on your toes with some unexpected choices and friendship in the least likely of places.

message 21: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Basco I had just recently finished the book "Getting the girl" by Susan Juby. Getting the girl by Susan Juby is a book about a teenager named sherman who is on a "secret mission" to find out who is responsible for getting the girls in his school get defiled. Getting defiled is basically your social life being murdered, no one talks to you, no one pays attention to you, you turned from a normal high school student to an invisible wall. At first he didn't really want anything to do with all this non-sense, until the girl of his dreams, Dina was thought to be the next victim. From there on out he goes super spy mode with the help of his clumsy friend Rick, which is basically no help for him at all. At first this book started of really boring but as I went farther into the book and the climax kept rising more excitement has been coming as the chapters went on. I really think you guys should read this book, you won't regret it!

message 22: by Antonio (last edited Nov 30, 2011 12:01PM) (new)

Antonio Delgado I finished reading the book Narnia by: C.S. Lewis. This book was boring in the begining but as it procedded it got exciting. The book started at Edmind house. It was during World War I and they were forced to move away. Lucy stumbled upon the Wardrobe and thats where it starts. I highly recommend this book becasue the characters were great and the text was fluid. This book was a fiction/action novel that never stops.

message 23: by May (new)

May Mendoza I've read "Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank. This novel shows the experience of two families in hiding, living with the fact that they could be found and killed at any time. I love this book because it shows a historical event from the point of view of a girl about my age. It also shows how the families could still live as a family, going through their greatest, scariest struggle, together. Honestly, I was uncomfortable reading another girl's diary, but it really is a great book.

message 24: by Alexia (new)

Alexia (alexiajaane) I recommend the book forever by Judy Blume. It is a very interesting story about love.

message 25: by Marcus (new)

Marcus Oducado I am reading "Full Court Press" by Mike Lupica. So far this book has been about about a girl that has the chance of being in the nba. She has some struggles on being in the nba because many men in the league hate the idea of having the girl in the nba. This sports novel is very different than any other sports books that I have read. I recommend this book for anyone that loves to play sports.

I'm interested in books about lives of Jews during the Nazi regime. I don't know if I would like it though because the thought of a person of similar age experiencing something like that is very disturbing. Do you recommend reading it anyway? How does she cope with living during such a brutal period in history?

message 32: by Jake (last edited Nov 30, 2011 06:26PM) (new)

Jake Thompson I am reading "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which is a collection of five books that make up the Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy series. It is a wonderful book that will have you laughing throughout the entire time that you are reading it. Even if you are not a science fiction fan it is still worth a try if you need something to cheer you up. I would reccommend "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and all the rest of the books in the series to anyone who wants to have a good chuckle. It is also an excellent guide for anyone who wants to leave the Earth and hitchhicke their way accross the universe someday.

message 42: by Mark (new)

Mark Perez (goodreadscommarky_mark) The book that I recommend is “Saint Iggy”. The main character is Iggy Corso. He does the right thing for the wrong reasons and the wrong things for the right reasons. It all begins when he gets in trouble from a Spanish teacher for being accused for drugs and weapons. Then he gets suspended for it and makes a plan to change everyone’s thoughts about him.

This is told from the point of view from Elie Wiesel himself. It describes his exploits during his time on the infamous Auschwitz. The craziest part is that this all occurred while he was in his early teens. Although his body survived, the traumatic events that took place destroyed the being he was before.

message 44: by Ciara (new)

Ciara Thompson The book that I recommend is " Go Figure " by Jo Edwards .Which is a fictional story about life right now. The main character Ryan is overweight and it makes her very self-conscious of everything. Its a 'Teen-Drama'. I liked this book because it covered a lot of problems, drama and relationships that teens go through. I thought it was funny, cute and romantic. I recommend this to anyone who may have any insecurities about themselves . Its a great book , I loved reading it !

message 49: by Kristen (new)

Kristen I read the "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. It is a fiction book about North America in the distant future with thirteen districts ruled by a Capitol. After the districts go to war with the Capitol the thirteenth district is defeated and the Capitol wins. To keep the remaining twelve districts in line the Capitol demands that the districts send tribute in the form of a boy and a girl from each district to fight to the death until only one remains standing. This is a really good book because it has a lot of suspense and doesn't lack in action. As soon as you have read the first chapter the book is so good that you are compelled to read further. This is a very well-written book and has action, romance, drama, and suspense within its pages and is undoubtedly worth reading.
