Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die discussion

Why is this on the list? I made an attempt to read it once... it is not well-written. It is an accumulation of horrors, the effect of which is ultimately (perhaps surprisingly) tedious and boring.

I would argue that it might be important to be conversant in de Sade's philosophy and intention, but it is actually not necessary to read this book. Peruse it perhaps, to get the general idea, but discerning literary enthusiasts will probably find the reading experience a huge waste of time.

Edited to add: Sorry that I got the title wrong. I must have 101 on the brain. Too much 1984? It's OK though... at least that's a great book.
