Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Hey everyone! Our November 15 - December 15 read will be

Mistress of the Vatican: The True Story of Olimpia Maidalchini: The Secret Female Pope

by Eleanor Herman

We will start the discussion on November 15.

We'll do the discussion threads broken up by chapters like all the other times, but I figure this thread can be used by those frustrated with amazon's delivery slowness (or your library's slowness) or for any other reason. Just don't discuss the book in any detail here! (General "I'm a couple chapters in and I like it" comments are fine, but we'll start the real discussion threads on the 15th.) For those of you just joining us, you can look through the previous threads in this Monthly Book Discussions section to see how we did it before because the process will be the same (there's also a thread just like this thread for the other books we've read together).

Paula (paulaan) Well - I'll start it off, ordered the book a week or so ago from the library guess what no book as yet! I m starting to dispair with my county libraries(UK)since they still have not got the last book

message 3: by Sara W (new)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Oh Paula, I hope your library is able to get this one! I'm glad you ordered it a little while ago. I'm hoping it's available on the Kindle otherwise I need to order it from my library too.

message 4: by Sera (new)

Sera Sara, it's available on Kindle. I bought it yesterday. I really love being able to get a book within minutes :)

message 5: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 5 comments I just ordered the book this morning from Amazon Marketplace (used), hopefully it will come quickly.

This will be the first time I have read a book with you all so I am looking forward to it!

Paula (paulaan) Just received this from my library service:

you requested Mistress of the Vatican by Eleanor Herman via HertsDirect. As yet, this title has only been published in America and unfortunately our buying remit does not extend to purchasing titles which have ony been published abroad. I will keep hold of your request until a UK publishing date becomes available and then pass your request on to our buying team.

Gonna have to see if I can get off Amazon or somewhere now.

Damn I need to find a job, its impacting my reading !!

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Thanks Sera! I love shopping in the Kindle store too, even if I only add books to my "save for later" page. It's like carrying a book store in my pocket!

Welcome Heidi! I'm glad you'll be reading with us!

Paula - that sucks! Maybe you can find a used copy from Amazon Marketplace like Heidi did or some other used book seller in the UK. My mom lives in Illinois, but she has had similar problems of getting books at the library because she lives in a really small community and they don't have the books or they never come in time from other libraries.

message 8: by Sera (new)

Sera I started the book earlier today. It's very interesting so far, but I didn't realize that it was non-fiction. Nevertheless, it is very well researched and informative.

message 9: by Sara W (new)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Oh, I don't think I realized it was non-fiction either. Wow, I can't believe we put two non-fiction books back to back! We've come a long way from our Tudor and Richard III rut, lol.

message 10: by Sera (new)

Sera LOL - I know! It's a really good read so far, but I love non-fiction. I'm looking forward to hear what the other club members think.

message 11: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 5 comments I just got an email that my book is on its way - hopefully it gets here fast!!!

message 12: by Sera (new)

Sera That's great, Heidi!

message 13: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Moody | 544 comments I'm still waiting on mine from the library - hoping it gets here in time to read with the group!
My library STILL doesn't have last months book - but it's on my hold list for when it does come in!

message 14: by Sera (new)

Sera Don't worry, Mandy. We still have plenty of time :)

message 15: by Sara W (new)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Yeah, definitely don't worry! I can literally get mine at any time since I have a Kindle, but I still haven't gotten around to it, lol! I'm trying to finish up a book I'm currently reading before I jump into that one.

message 16: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 181 comments I plan to get this one read over the Thanksgiving break, so I'll be joining in the conversation then. It's sitting on my table from the library, but hardcover books are much more airplane friendly than lugging around on the subway. :) I need a Kindle!

message 17: by Sara W (new)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Ha ha, the Kindle is definitely subway friendly! I love it (it's also much lighter and can fit in my purse easier than a hardcover book and I don't have to haul around two books on those days that I know I'll finish one before my commute is over because I can have the second book ready to go on the Kindle).

message 18: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 181 comments Well I just got an iPod Touch and it has a book reader so maybe I'll have a classic book ready to go and test that out first. :) Problem is, I don't buy books right now - I'm a library girl - so it would end up costing me more in the long run buying the Kindle books. Which doesn't stop me from wanting one... :)

message 19: by Sara W (new)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments What type of files does the iPod touch support? You can get library eBooks (pretty limited section unfortunately) through the NY Public Library in PDF and MobiPocket formats (not sure how that works with Brooklyn though - I notice I can only return books in Staten Island or Manhattan and possibly the Bronx, but not Queens or Brooklyn).

message 20: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 181 comments I haven't fully explored the capability yet, but the website is at lexcycle.com. From what I understand, you can read any format, so long as it is not DRM protected. Here's the entire list - http://www.lexcycle.com/supported-for.... Semms like in the future they're planning to support online downloading of books as well.

Clearly the screen is smaller than the Kindle, and I don't know how battery life would go, but I'll keep reporting back. :)

Both NYC and Brooklyn public library systems (separate systems) have online content, that I believe you could access as well using Stanza.
