There were alot of orphans after World War II in Europe. Many of them were very taken by the orphan character Pippi Longstocking who was a larger than life, Paul Bunyan like character with superhuman strengths and abilities and a sunny, optimistic attitude. This character they could relate to and they felt stronger after reading about her adventures. This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend. Copeland's Appalachian Spring and Billy the Kid and Rodeo might be good music for background, some of it sounds like Pippi's horse.
