Off The Shelf discussion

It's impossible to find a system where everyone gets the book of their choice every month, however, if we can each name a few possibilities, we can then put them in a poll to vote on and come up with some kind of schedule. Sound good? Ready, set, go!

I'm interested in A Reliable Wife, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, and The House at Riverton.
I added them to the group's book shelf so everyone can take a look-see at the descriptions.

I also have The Last Unicorn! But i figured i was the only one who would wanna read it. Im gonna propose The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Broken For You by Stephanie Kallos and Deerskin by Robin McKinley.

But strangely enough, I too would probably read any one of Karens suggestions.

AH turds! OK, can I also put the latest ursula Leguin novel on our list of possibilities? I will happily take off The God of Small Things (I guess :( ) and exchange it for this one. It's new but man alive, I love her writing. It's called "The Dispossessed". Dystopian, Utopian, whatever... looks fan-bloody-TASTIC. OK, OK, I'm done.

P.S. I put all my book selections on the bookshelf so you can check them out... because karen did that and I didn't want my books to look inferior to her books due to my being not thorough enough.

Wow, am I feeling stupid... that book is SOOO not even remotely new. There is just a new one in that series. Insert face plant to hard desk surface here.

By the way - we don't have to nominate new books, only books we are interested in reading. The advantage to something a bit older is that it is easier to obtain at the library or find at used book store, so great!

This reminds me of "Santiago" by Mike Resnick, which is so impossibly old it doesn't even show up on Goodreads. Not the same theme at all, but the way it impacted readers, and had multiple layers (according to what reviewers are saying about Dispossessed).

I was just happy someone else put it out there and I didn't have to risk my fragile self worth on the rejection. OR I'm just happy that someone else actually reads the same weird old books that I do.

SO, K-Nel, What are we waiting for?!? Let's do this thing! Can we go ahead and set up a vote for which one we'd like to read and narrow them down so I can get the book? I perused Deerskin and decided I didn't want it to be on my list. I am not in the mood to read it again right now... it's kind of a massive downer.

Honestly, out of all the ones so far, I'm diggin two of Karen's the most: Major Pettigrew and The Reliable Wife. Broken for You is also kind of in the same vein and as I have already read about 1/4 of it I can tell you that the writing is very good.

Karen, you must have been dead on about Maeve Binchy being amazing and now I really want to read one of her books. I checked on pbswap and there were almost NONE of her books available on there. That makes me want to read them all the more!!! Bliggity blarg!

Also, did you know Neil Gaiman wrote Stardust (very cool movie made out of it)?!?!? That's pretty great.

Yes - I like that one too! Did you see Neverwhere - look for it on Netflix or somewhere online. You'd really like it!
